I’m guessing for ideological reasons Stainsey. The Spectator is of course the magazine of free market capitalism. The Swedish approach keeps businesses making money. But personally I hope that the Swedish model does work. It should have more deaths per million in the short term than the stricter lockdowns (though it’s still lower than ours), but get it over with earlier. I suppose that over the course of the epidemic the number of deaths would be the same, allowing for differences in demographics and quality/capacity of healthcare, just different timescales. We calculated that the NHS would collapse if we took the same route. It’s the big differences between countries with, on the face of it similar populations (in terms of demographics if not numbers) and health systems which is so confusing. The economic impact is also forecast (and we know we can’t trust forecasts) to be hugely variable- Sweden (light restrictions) economy to shrink by 6%; Germany (medium/heavy restrictions) by 10%; UK (medium restrictions) by 35%.

So am I right in thinking that their approach, even though it could be classed as successful (similar death rate but less economic impact), would not of worked for us due to factors such as population demographics ? That's the scientific evidence they were talking about. How very predictable. Thought they had already gone over this twice already. We went from no evidence to show any benefits to then showing a little bit of benefit. These scientific expert advisors are at least becoming transparent themselves!

I’ll answer if you get Mao off your avatar....... Actually I think demographics - they have a younger population - but more importantly health service capacity. Our government’s terror of an NHS collapse, which was fair enough, was the root cause of our approach not, I think the pure number of deaths. From what I can see the result has been lots of capacity in the NHS apart from COVID wards and intensive care.
First it will be ‘wear a homemade mask on public transport, because we haven’t got enough proper masks to spare’. Homemade masks will be made of cloth and will get hot, wet and smelly very quickly, a lovely environment for all sorts of viruses and bacteria. But we will think we are safe and get right in each other’s faces again. There is no ‘new’ evidence on this, it’s bullshit.

Hey SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my reasoning is based on talking to people in the haulage industry, as in I have been personally told by a good friend he has been turned away from a ****ing hospital because the goods in was shut after 3pm so how does that suck, so you run along and until you find someone or have proof it didn’t happen STFU.
I just hope the advisors and ministers show some spine on this one. The scientific consensus is really clear - proper fluid repellent masks are needed for health care workers in close contact with infected patients, people who are infected should wear them (though if they have symptoms they should not be out in public anyway) to help prevent them infecting others. Nobody else needs them, they should stay 2 metres apart and wash their hands frequently. What I’ve been doing for what feels like a lifetime now so far successfully. This is the advice issues by the WHO, very explicitly (though I’m cautious about what a pinball wizard knows about this stuff) and even those countries, like Hong Kong and Japan, where mask wearing is a habit. Massive risk of false sense of security from this. If they do it they should issue (not promise to issue, actually issue) everyone in the country with proper effective masks (either reusable or in bulk) with training on how to use them.
