Darn it, I love to disagree with you, but this was one that I've backed this morning. He was a second quicker than Clipsham Tiger last time out, despite carrying 7lbs more.

I am more than disappointed to see you not putting up the 7:00 though, it looks a race where your theory of high draws should come to the fore, with the ones I like drawn high. I've backed Honey Gg and Arzaak in doubles with Motahassen.

I'll be back with a view on the 7.00 around teatime. (I don't suppose you young people do afternoon tea - cucumber sandwiches, gentleman's relish, toasted crumpets)? In fact, the 8f of the 4.50 is decidedly outside my comfort/concentration zone, and I'm much happier at five or six. You'll be pleased to hear that I don't regard either of your picks as inherently ridiculous.
 
Ahhh, afternoon tea. Triangle sandwiches with mediocre fillings, a scone and some puddings. A thing of mediocrity in my book, much akin to an afternoons racing at Bath or similar. Sounds like a "nice" thing, but you come away pretty disappointed and longing for some decent nourishment.

A Yorkshire afternoon tea is much more like it - Big hearty sandwiches (ham, cheese and pickle), proper cake and scones, pot of tea. Yummy.

This horse has shown enough in last two runs to suggest that this mark isn't beyond him. His sire statistics are a major positive and given that he has started well in previous runs, I hope he can get into a prominent position. Backed and will trade off at half the odds. Win and place.

Traded at half odds so nothing lost on win, and came back for third at the line so pays for place money.

Well done to Hollie Doyle, cracking ride to get past Hayley's year record.
 
So, on to the 7.00, where twelve moderate but by no means useless horses fight for a winner's prize just south of £2,800. Why do owners put up with having to battle for scraps when the great and good are throwing an extra couple of million at Ascot ? It's not surprising that small trainers pull a few strokes and small owners lay their non-triers occasionally.

Anyway, the pin falls on Catapult. Its previous trainer seemed to think it could win at 7f and upwards, but it didn't, and the latest Chelmsford run suggests
that it didn't really get 6f there. The trainer is 0/10 in the past fortnight, and Josie Gordon 0/15, plus it's never won off a mark higher than the 40s (51 today) so that all looks promising. But there's been fairly steady money for it all day, and this does look a bit like a Keightley plot. If you can get 5-1 or better, it looks worth a modest punt.

Unlike Motahassen, whose form is beginning to look seriously dog-eared.

This feels like "well done old Joe for scrounging the most tab ends" or some such. Riding crap horses round a ****ty fibresand track for the benefit of a hundred or so spectators plus a few die-hards betting on line.................... The whole thing just smacks of pathetic. Sorry to be negative but I just find the whole concept of low-grade racing utterly depressing. Like alcoholics nipping at their drinks in some seedy bar.

Anyway on that cheery note I look forward to Sandown tomorrow.
