Trenchers is a bit of a walk from Magpie. There are quite a few fish and chips shops closer. If you or any friends are over again I would try Hadley’s in Whitby and North Beach Cafe in Brid. 149 is still good but they have been overtaken by North Bay in my opinion although they are dearer than 149.

It's only a five minute walk away (0.3m).

According to my husband the best Bridington fish and chip place in the summer season of 1955 and '56 was at the Marlborough cafe on the Esplanade. He helped to cook them! Didn't win any awards though. Yardley Tiger helped to serve them as he was a waiter there in '55.

If your husband was in Brid then he will have surely sampled the best fish and chip shop of the lot, Knaggs, which was on Albert Street off West Street. Queues used to be round the corner past the Londesborough pub. The Londesborough is no longer there, demolished after a huge fire a couple of years back.

Was in Magpie and Trenchers recently on different occasions and was not impressed with the fish and chips in either. Seems to me standards have reduced in all the establishments on that side of the Harbour. Next time will have to try Hadley's that has been recommended on here.

The Magpie's definitely gone downhill, I used to go regularly years ago and it was brilliant, but the last couple of times it's been really mediocre.

Ever go to Knaggs in Bridlington? My favourite place when a youngster, don’t think I have ever had better take away fish and chips.

Agree that the Marlborough was good but the best fish and chips, mushy peas and pattie during the 1950/1960s anywhere was my mom and dad's fish and chip shop in Northumberland Avenue off Fountain Road in Hull. Whole area razed to the ground in the 1970s.
 
After too many fish suppers... yer blobfish. Chips are free :emoticon-0100-smile

Tried Jackson's in Brid yesterday. Opposite Bull and Sun on Baylegate. £4.40 for medium haddock. One of the best fish I've ever had anywhere. Firm and fresh. It was skinned, but you can't have everything. I can't say service was fast either, as every fish was fried to order, but it was worth the wait. I'll be going again. Peas were nicely salted too.

Both have, or will have some competition soon, not that I rate either of them. Noticed on a recent visit to Whitby that Papa's have bought one of the biggest buildings in Whitby, the old bank opposite the swing bridge and are opening a fish and chip restaurant.
Tried Frydays in Cottingham recently, very average and they skimp on the chips but the guy who has took over Mick Milners lads chippy opposite Tiger in Cottingham knows what he is doing. Superb fare from there, bit pricey but well worth it.

Tried Papa’s at Bilton a couple of times, not impressed at all.

I’ll be having my weekly visit to Whitehead’s tomorrow.
