I think the three chippies adjacent to the harbour in Whitby are exceptions to your rule - Trenchers and Quayside are as good as any you'll ever eat, The Magpie isn't too shabby either.
Don’t rate Trenchers that highly. Not as good as Magpie. Think Hadley’s, which is over bridge, is the best of the lot. Mind you, it is all personal taste. Some people rave over Cave Street and I think they are very poor.
It's years since Cave st was great. Trenchers is way overpriced and for no apparent reason. Two chip shops that survive on past reputations. Does my head in that. People seem to stick with what they used to love. Don't like change!
It is all about personal taste - when we bimble thru' to Whitby on the bikes we always use Trenchers, and will do, until the freshness or quality ever drops; if you're partial to tartare sauce you should pop into Trenchers and get a polystyrene cup of their homemade stuff - tart and creamy, really good.
Trenchers prices were my main issue with them. Though I have been to lots of far better places. Went to Cave Street coming back from City after reading some people on here rave about them.Thought they were very poor. The next time I came by car with my lad went in again just to see if the first time had been a one off. Still poor and my lad, which is unusual for him, only ate half of it before putting the rest in the bin.
Trenchers gets away with their prices because of location. Not a patch on Whitehead’s in Hornsea, which being in the middle of a council estate with no views, serves far superior fish and chips at much lower prices.
Whiteheads is very good, consistently good - same consistency as Trenchers but certainly cheaper; Harpers at Wetwang was also consistently good, although I'm not so sure it's still as good now it's part of the Deep Blue chain of chippie; anyone wanting great vfm should try Papas at Cleethorpes, it's very good and priced to beat most.
Was in Harper’s at Wetwang a couple of months ago and they were just the same. Papas at Scarborough is always very good. Harper’s at Staxton is still OK as well. As is Stuarts at Driffield.
We went to Whiteheads last week for the first time in about a year, in the interim we’ve been using The Frying Farmer at Aldbrough. I’ve sung their (FF) praises on here often enough, however of late something’s gone sadly wrong there, they no longer sell large haddock as the waitress told me that people wouldn’t be willing to pay £9.50 a fillet. The fish that they’ve served up to me of recent times has gone badly downhill, I’ll always be honest in my assessment, it appears to be cheaper fillets, certainly not good and I won’t be back until I hear from someone on here that they’ve returned back to their previous quality. The fish at Whiteheads last week was beautiful, large flakes just as it should be, it was more expensive than FF but I’d always rather pay more and get top quality. Rant over, and sorry Geoff if you read this but, as I said, it’s an honest assessment.
You don’t win UK’s best fish & chip restaurant based on your location. Personally I’m not a massive fan, I don’t like the way it’s fitted out and it’s always rammed, but the fish & chips have always been excellent.
Still don’t rate them. Not a patch on Whitehead’s. Or 149 in Brid, which won fish and chip shop of the year or North Beach in Brid. My main gripe with Trenchers is that it is way over priced in comparison to other places which are equally good and better. Ever tried Hadley’s in Whitby? Far better in my opinion. Better than Magpie as well. Still, like music and art, all subjective and down to personal taste. My son swears by a fish and chip shop in Brid that I would rather miss and cook my own tea than give money to them.
Best I had in the UK was at the Magpie back in 2010. Our best friends on extended vacation in the UK went to 149 in Bridlington on our recommendation the year after they won and were really impressed. We also recommended that they try the Magpie when they later visited Whitby but the queue was long and went to a nearby restaurant instead. Said it was excellent and believe it was Trenchers.
