First chinese? China Town above Fletchers. Chicken chow mein with banana fritter for pudding. First chinese takeaway. The one on Bricknell. Chicken chopsuey and chips. That was some years later. Not sure if that was due to a lack of chinese takeaways or what.
It’s the same chain as the one down Whitefriargate and one in Endike Lane (not sure if there’s more) but I’ve always found the portions small, the chips hit and miss and the whole thing nothing special. Gravy was good though.
I had forgotten it was called Trawl Bar, it was just the chippie to me. I certainly had a few of those mad cow burgers you mention, though I mostly got patties. A pattie and scraps were a good staple dinner time diet for the 6 weeks holiday.. unless of course we had gone to Albert Ave baths for the day, where we would get In as soon as it opened and leave about 4.00 just in time to get home for tea, thoroughly wrinkled and sunburnt after sitting in the grassed area next to the outdoor pool when we wasn’t in the pool.
The guides at St Cuthberts were a far better class than St Ninians when I was a similar aged teenager
Sorry to drag this up. We are in Scarborough this weekend for my 60th I intend to have Fish and chips. Which is the best?
No novelty when you spend so much time on Hull beach. A rule of thumb is the nearer you get to the harbour at a seaside place the worse the fish and chips are as visitors will eat anything. Glad to see the fish and chip place near to me I recommended was in the top 3 for awards in East Yorkshire.
If you are down on the sea front ignore those that are there and head inwards a bit in Columbus Ravine for North Bay Fisheries. A while since I’ve been but always gets good reviews.
Also, the ones away from the harbour are dependant on locals for most of the year. The ones near the harbour are only open part of the year and often have inexperienced staff running them. It is generally true in Brid. Jack’s is the last but one decent one in Brid before the harbour. One calledvAudrey’s is decent but they don’t skin their fish.
