Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has revealed League One Sunderland have beaten him to signing a striker he was keen on.
The Addicks boss is still working hard to bolster his squad ahead of their debut season back in the Championship – but is losing out to lower-league clubs who boast a larger budget.
The South Londoners beat Sunderland in the League One play-off final at Wembley last season, but owner Roland Duchatelet’s penny-pinching leaves Bowyer a small war-chest to work with.
“It seems like everyone we want, we get, but I can assure you that is not the case,” explained the Charlton chief.
There was a striker we wanted but he’s just gone to Sunderland. So, we’re competing with League One clubs. That’s the reality of it. We don’t always get the people we’re trying to pursue but we’ll keep working hard and going through our list.
“We’ll move on. We’ve got a lot of people that we like. There’s a lot of good players out there. It’s trying to pick the right ones and hope that they choose us over the other clubs that are obviously chasing them as well.

I reckon this has gotta be Marquis.

A striker we could get that a championship club would fancy? Seems the only prospect (unless it’s a loan then it could be literally any ****er).
Charleton recently linked with Ross McCormack.

Boyer playing games, just rumour mongering to highlight his predicament. No substance whatsoever, what striker is he talking about, none arrived here in the last couple of years. <laugh>

Other names that Charlton have been linked with recently are Sam Baldock and Eddie Nketiah on loan.

I doubt it will be any of these.

I don't think we'll see anyone through the door until we move Oveido on, does anyone have any idea what his wages are ?

Until we move anyone else on I don't see us making any permanent signings so I wouldn't hold my breath for Marquis etc, especially on the word of a scrote like Bowyer. I think Ross is working on more deals but I'd be very surprised if any signings are going to be announced unless it's a loan.

I see that Ovie Ejaria is unwanted by Liverpool, I quite liked him but out of our price range no doubt.

Taken from a Charlton website

Lee Bowyer mentioned last night that we missed out on a striker to League One Playoff opponents Sunderland, it is unfortunate that we are in a position where players would prefer a League One side over a Championship side, but when you hear who the player is it is no longer a surprise.

Doncaster top scorer John Marquis is the man who is set to join Sunderland and Lee Bowyer is obviously disappointed at missing out on him. Of course, he is a good player, but would he fit in with Charlton? Definitely not.

The former Millwall man is nowhere near liked by us Charlton fans and it would divide opinion signing a player like him due to the history he holds with The Lions. I personally wouldn’t have minded him being here, look at Jonny Williams came from a team we don’t like and now we love him, things like that in football change all the time and it could have done with Marquis.

Love has been given away - 520k remaining
Catts gone approx £4m remaining
Watmore still here
McGeady just taken a big pay cut
Gooch at the top of a league 1 wage (on his day he's well above this level - just only happens once or twice a season!!)
Oviedo we're trying to shift.

Pay offs probably around the 50% mark so £2.2m saved by the club by removing these players - but it's also cost us £2.2m too!!

Scary!!
