Absolutely. There is a financial divide undoubtedly but it costs less to live up here than down there. That said... I was offered a job doing what I do now down there fir 4 times as much a few years ago.
That’s the thing, it sort of levels out. It must be tough for people doing standard jobs of course, I know they pay a bit more but even commute in the price of property etc is insane. Even at 4 times the income as you had an offer, that probably wouldn’t put you on easy street down there. You’ve got to be smashing it or debted up to the eyeballs in simple terms.
If you take London and the surrounding commuter area as a whole there's massive differences in cost of living. I live in Herts but I know people on the Surrey side who to buy a house like mine are having to pay twice as much. Similarly, it takes a similar amount of time to get in to central London on the train from where my in laws live as it does for me but you pay less than half the price from there. It's not all as expensive as you'd think.
Yeah I get that, there’s no such thing as ‘value’ down there on property though either side. You buy at the right level you’ll make money on the asset, but there’s not a ‘cheap’ way of doing it. I’m not actually saying it’s a bad thing mate, my point was exactly as you say, it can always be levelled out. Being savvy like you say living in the ‘other side’ can change everything. Let’s be realistic though, Marcus was saying he’d been offered 4 times his money, that’s not standard for London. I’d get about an extra £12k for moving to London within my current job. If I wanted a property equivalent to mind I’d be looking at easily 6 times the cost.
No, you probably don't get any property down here for real value. Based on demand I suppose. I'm not really sure what my house would be worth back home. Not sure I'd earn that much different if I moved home though because what I do is fairly specialised. Makes it difficult to compare really. I'd probably be better off moving home although there are fewer jobs up for me up there I think.
Aye there’s a lot of factors. There’s always the option of you live in the South, are mortgaged, to sell up and buy up here out of equity and be mortgage free. That’s a definite carrot. It then comes down to the fact most folk are generally quite settled where they are don’t it.
That would be the route I'd fancy going down to be honest but the Mrs is southern through and through and we're more likely to move back to her neck of the woods. Having said that, we could buy somewhere bigger there than out current place for a lot less so it works out ok. I'll just be further from the Stadium of Light!

350 is good for some places! Mind, I wouldn't want to live near Wembley. The IKEAcar park there gives me nightmares! 75 grand man! that brings a tear to my eye. When did you buy that then?

Not 100%. Index linked value was £85k in Jan when we redid our mortgage. We didn’t have a full valuation done so might be worth more.
I've just finished listening to it this morning. I think Stewy is fully invested and we're under his skin, Charlie not so much. I think he sees us very much as a business where he stands to make some nice money out of. They've sorted the business side of things out which is great but I still stand by what I said about Charlie further up.
