Yep, it's assault. He should be convicted for that.

A mate of mine was at that match. He’s a big Palace fan and ST holder. The guy Cantona twatted was a well known gobby troublemaker.

Apparently, according by to my mate, he ran down to where Cantona was and yelled ‘Go on, **** off back to France, you French ****” and then tried to spit at him...

    The rest you know.

Not condoning what Cantona did, he obviously just snapped and went after the guy.

Does Nevlle really think fans are going to pay £50 to sit behind a ****ing fence?
Football on TV will look **** with no fans in the lower tier of grounds.

Cantona got an eight or ten month ban.

Fencing keeps fans at bay, not players.

Going onto a pitch is a criminal act IIRC.

If fences were a good idea (they're not but if they were) and Neville hadn't bothered to say the same before, it wouldn't change the fact we should have them would it? It would be on their own merits. They're not though and there are plenty of reasons why so Neville's wrong, the end.

    It's a criminal offence and will go to court;

Common Assault – s39 Criminal Justice Act 1988. An offence of Common Assault is committed when a person either assaults another person or commits a battery. An assault is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to apprehend the immediate infliction of unlawful force.

Because, because... Man Utd should have a retrospective points deduction and the title should be awarded to Newcastle for that season!!!

The dodgy frenchman should cost his club dearly and bring long deserved glory to the magnificent Newcastle!!

What? That was the season before we finished 2nd? Man Utd were 2nd that season and Newcastle were 6th? Oh, forget it, should have kicked him harder.

I've sat behind them, even at a world cup game. ****ing awful, pissed me right off. Game went to pens and we were behind the goal and it was worse!

All fans should wear the neck braces like off the start of the Running Man. Go onto the pitch and your head explodes!

Attack on Grealish, didn't the guy actually touch him in some manner? In which case you'd be looking at Battery (which is probably the next bit of info after that quote there). It's the other part of common assault is when a person actually makes unlawful contact - you prosecute that because, among other reasons, it'll be easier to prove. They are both summary offences punishable up to 6 months and/or a fine in a magistrates.

Football fans get a five year ban at least. The point was Manchester United didn't get a points deduction.

The Gills fan that got prosecuted for an identical offence, being a youth, got a nine month referral order and a five year ban.

I remember standing behind them n he 1980s mainly at WHL, but also at Selhurst Park, The Valley and Loftus Road. Horrible things that spoilt the view...was the main reason I watch spurs from the top of the shelf ... a distant view was better than looking through metal squares.

If it happened anywhere else then there's no real chance of imprisonment for a first offence. Given the fact it was watched by so many and there's been a recent spate of these types of things there's a possibility the magistrate may seek to make an example of the offender but it's not likely.

I'd expect a non-custodial but with strong conditions regarding future actions.

    Oh, ok.

A United fan didn't run on the pitch and punch an opposition player though, so?

Hang on I see where he's going.

Cantona should have got a 5 year ban, meaning we simply have to discount his goal in the 1-0 victory against newcastle the following year, thus giving Newcastle the title retrospectively.

It's morally the correct thing to do. I'll write to the FA lads. Sorted.
