Like you R&W I have eyed retiring to Spain. I still may if we get a hard brexit. As things stand currently under Spanish law, to spend more than 183 days ( 6months ) in Spain in any calendar year you have to become a fiscal resident and pay all your taxes on worldwide income to the Spanish authorities ( Civil service / Military pensions are exempt ). To qualify for fiscal residency unless you are in receipt of the state pension you need to have an income of 7000 euros or 30,000 in the bank plus private healthcare which costs around 1000 euros per year. IE you have to prove you will not be a burden on the Spanish State. This is all permissible under EU law. I have no idea if to come to the UK similar qualification applies however if it did we may not be in the situation we are in.

I don’t like the fact if you’re found guilty of a crime in this country you can go through European court of appeal.
To me it’s lawyers taking money for useless cases but it grinds me that it exist.

My wife’s a director of an insurance company so she can get work in Gibraltar if she’s lucky. Me I’m bolloxed because I doubt they have much use for a concrete technical person who struggles with English let alone Spanish.
It’s a shame really as we wanted to retire there so no the window is closing.

I am screwed as well, at least my wife can work from Spain also Have to hope the €30k limit will be lowered when the UK realises the £30k limit we are imposing is too high for the workers we need or the Spanish will lower it to keep the Brits coming in. Anyway I am going over on Friday <party>

Just got back from Gibraltar on Sunday. Loved it.
Does the £30k income have to be per person, or joint?
Also, does rental income get taken into account? (I don’t own anything in Spain - yet, but I have 3 houses here in sunny Swindon!)

Currently it is per person I believe for third country residents but not 100% certain. I will have to hope the Spanish will be more lenient with Brits ! Yes rental income would be taken into account but you would need to pay tax on it to the Spanish tax authorities. Also need to be careful if you sold one of your rentals in the year you moved to spain or after as they would tax you on the capital gains. Citizen Advice Bureau Spain has a facebook page with loads of info

    Cheers Raver.
I’ve got 8 years left working here anyway so it will be a while - I probably won’t sell over here.
Btw where are your places in Spain? We go to Benalmádena because a friend let’s us have her flat over there for ‘mates rates’.

I don’t think so ROD - there are plenty of Russians living there - and Scandinavians - Finns - and also we Brits were buying there before the EU was even conceived.
I think we will still be able to do it - but it will take longer to arrange, cost more money and carry less services (ie health).

The myth is that we cannot sell bananas of a certain shape. The truth is that they are merely classed differently.

All of this shouting about how the EU is a dictatorship that rules us from Brussels and we need to take back control. What other laws don't you like JGF? Or Red Robin (who's mysteriously disappeared again)? Surely it can't just simply be bananas driving all of this distaste?

Is this thread indicative of the general feeling about Brexit in the UK? Looking from afar (although not for much longer as we are returning to the UK in 2 months after 61/2 years 'Down Under' some might even say DUNDER.....) there seems very entrenched positions, with people on both sides believing the rhetoric on what they feel suits their decision to leave or remain.

From afar it all looks like a lot of scaremongering and politicians playing up their own importance, whilst not having an actual clue what to do next.

It's a very poor state of affairs when Aussies can even take the piss out of our politics, considering what shambles they have been for the past 6-8 years.

There are some very strong feelings on both sides Supcon - understandably so because this is the biggest thing to happen to the UK since WW2.
However, this current noise will seem like the sound of a pin dropping compared to the eruption of fury which will happen when/if we leave.

    - we leave with NO deal; the Remainers and some Brexiteers who wanted a deal will be furious

    - we leave with May’s deal; many Remainers and many Brexiteers will be furious, because it doesn’t give anyone what they wanted

    - we remain; All Brexiteers will be furious.

Better hold onto your hats - it’s about to get VERY bumpy........

But you used yours in France because we are still in the EU.
That may (no pun intended) stop when we leave, as we probably won’t have the E1111 card going forward. Which is probably the card you referred to.
Also small things that people don’t think about like data roaming. The mobile companies could effectively stop it as it was a government decision to stop them charging, not the mobile networks being nice.
I also like the EU rule on delayed flights were if delayed for 3 hours or more you COULD be entitled to claim. Me and the wife done that on a flight back from Rome delayed for 4 hours got back as much as the holiday itself.
It’s small things that people won’t notice they’ve not negotiated.

As things stand the EHIC card ceases after 29th March so you will need travel insurance. Unless a deal is reached. Not sure if it’s a taste of things to come but it took nearly an hour to get through border control in Alicante this morning

    Going or coming back?
ROD for best part of almost 2 decades travelled in EU, in Spain had to have international drivers licence in Spanish, and had one anyway for eastern side . cant remember when that stopped...
over here seems you go into accident and emer: get treated then either go home or fill in details etc in EU seems you go in, " ah English! a moment, doctor is coming but also a lady to ask a few questions /paperwork"
" doctor is on his way to take you to have a scan...whatever … same sentence do you have a card? " must say the treatment service was 200% of anything I had over here!
