The only people that care about net spend are either those that know that their team are (quoting Arsene Wenger here) footballistically inferior to another team, and those that fear that they might be inferior to another team

As I have complete confidence in Man Utd being superior to all but Barcelona, I couldn't care less about net spend

In what way are City set in stone to finish top 2?

Please explain this to me.

The way I see it is 3 clubs are set in stone for the top 4. Man Utd, Chelsea & Arsenal. These have been in the top 4 for the last 8 seasons or something.

City have done it once and now have the added challenge of the CL. How will they cope? Who knows but everything this season is new for them as a club. They now have expectations like never before and these need everything to be focused on the goal. Nothing is guaranteed for City this season thats for sure but I am sure it will be an adventure for them.

Liverpool are also there in the frame, new confidence around the club and they are of course the other 'top 4' side from over the years. The last 2 years has seen them fall away but they will be fighting to get back in there.

Tottenham like City have done it just once and found out how tough it is when you get there.

I know you can't judge teams after 2-3 games but I do think Arsenal will struggle this season (compared to previous seasons). I still expect them to be in the top 6 but not sure what position. I think it will be Liverpool/Spurs/Arsenal fighting for 4th. Top 3 should be Utd, City and Chelsea - although don't know what order.

Whichever way it goes should be a good season with some great football being played already.

Contrary to popular belief I think it's Liverpool, City, Chelsea, United and Arsenal all in contention for the title. Obviously City and United have a much better chance than the others, but we're all aiming for the same thing. Spurs aren't going to make it very far this season, 6th at best.

I wouldn't go as far as saying a team is 'set in stone' to get top 4 purely based on them getting it for the last 8 years. But I believe Arsenal will still put a good fight up for it, just remember what they were saying about us early last season.

There is no such thing a set in stone when you are talking about football, any team can have a bad run and there are always going to be games where the underdog turns over the favourite, i expect us to give the top teams a run for their money this season but would not go so far as to say the top two places belong to Manchester.

am i reading this right? this guy thinks man city are not sure fire favorites for at least top 4, let alone second.... wow has he actuall paid attention?

then he thinks this arsenal side are set in stone for the top 3.....

actually thats hilarious.

I'll put a bet on here and now... £50 via paypal or some such that city will finish in the top 3 and ahead of arsenal who will be 5th

Well yes, because being in the top 4 for 8 years means you automatically qualify for top 4. <ok>

Are united really set in stone to finish top 2? They've looked good at home, but they really struggeled against WBA away. I think they will really struggle if their away record is anything like what it was last year, as teams like Liverpool and City are much stronger, and Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs will pose strong threats as long as they dont have a sudden slump like they all did last year. I think Arsenal and Spurs will recover, and there is a possibility that united might even finish outside the top 4. I know its unlikely, but if theres a god out there......

carAgger don't rule the rags out of the title they will still finish higher than Liverpool who after their 1st 11 don't seem to have much strength in depth, compared to Utd, City, Chelsea, and Arsenal. The best I can see Liverpool finishing is 6th or maybe if the Spurs have a bad season then 5th as for 4th not a chance.

Interesting viewpoint, probably agree with the first three, but as for arsenal any chance you could post a typical starting 11 and bench for them so we can compare?

So you think Spurs have performed like a top 5 team so far? I know it's early but I cant see them doing any better than last year.

I would say a rough estimate would be:

Liverpool
----------Reina
Kelly--Agger--Carra--Enrique
Hend--Gerrard--Lucas--Downing
------Suarez--Carroll

Doni, Skrtel, Johnson, Adam, Spearing, Maxi, Kuyt
Others: Aurelio, Coates, Shelvey, Bellamy, Flanagan, Robinson

Arsenal
---------Chesney
Sagna--Verm--Mert--Santos
-----Wilshere--Ramsey
Walcott--Arteta--Gervinho
-----------RVP

Fabianski, Djourou, Gibbs, Song, Arshavin, Benayoun, Chamakh
Others: Diaby, Koscielny, Rosicky, Park, Chamberlain, Squillaci

Regardless of what you think of my choice of line up, I would argue Arsenal have more strength both on the bench and outside the match squad. Players like Benayoun and Arshavin would be more likely to turn a game, imo, than Adam or Kuyt. And whilst Arsenal would struggle to replace RVP if he was injured, I think Liverpool would struggle much more if Downing or Suarez were injured as they are crucial players with no real replacement available. Liverpool have a stronger first XI, but I think overall the two squads are of similar quality and it will not be easy for either of them to be certain of 4th.

How would benayoun and Arshavin be better than Adam and Kuyt? Adam and Kuyt scored 25 goals between them last year and i 17 assists. As opposed to benayoun and arshavin that had 7 goals and 11 assists? You only as good as your last game. Stop arguing for the sake of arguing. Theres also johnson who is an england 1st choice right back, coates(best young player of copa america)skrtel who would walk into most teams in this league as oppposed to gibs, schillachi and koschienly. Add maxi who also contributed 10 goals last season and the beast called bellamy. Come now mate stop exposing urself. the liverpool bench is much stronger than arsenals, much stronger. I dont know how the league standings will end up. Lets just watch and enjoy.

Wow, someone has a bee up his ass. My point is that the subs bench is there for impact. I would much rather have Arshavin, with six goals and eleven assists from 37 appearances, 12 of which were as subs, than Adam with only two goals from open play and eight assists in 35 games only one of which was as a sub. Likewise with Benayoun who made almost every appearance last season off the bench as an impact sub. In my opinion:

Fabianski > Doni
Djourou > Skrtel
Gibbs < Johnson (but maybe not for long)
Song = Adam
Benayoun > Spearing
Arshavin > Maxi
Chamakh < Kuyt

So I'd take four Arsenal subs and two from Liverpool. If you disagree then that's your opinion - I'm sure the league table will have the final say as always.
