As a former keeper at a reasonable level I can say having a reliable set of defenders in front of you is of paramount importance.

Getting back on track - it's looking as though Ben Godfrey will not be going back on loan!!
This from PD's article today - “He had to show himself full of self confidence and competitive in pre-season and I think he has shown this. “It was important for me to see him in different positions. He had one or two good performances in the holding midfielder positions, which perhaps is the position we associate him with, but I was also pretty, pretty pleased with him in the central defensive position against FC Union Berlin. “He played 90 minutes at centre back and it is vital he can play in this position because physically he can win his battles in the air, he is cool with the ball at his feet and competitive in the duels. He is always awake in tactical things.. #excellentnews

 

Definitely appears to be in the first team squad. Am really pleased that Thompson has played so well in pre-season. Our midfield seems to be very strong this season, with more variety than last season.

 

Interesting that Farke sees Vrancic as one of the DM options:

“Let’s be honest, the holding midfielder in our squad there is a lot of competition, with Tom Trybull, Moritz Leitner, Alex Tettey, Mario Vrancic, when he is back, Louis Thompson,” said Farke.

The final comment is also intriguing regarding formations for next season:

“For me, it is impressive that he can show he can play in the central defence or as a three. Ben is important for my plans.”

Maybe we can loan him to a side with a half decent keeper who can head the opposite way?

 

Yes Thompson has been a big surprise. I thought he'd take more time to be ready but the signs are good. He and Godfrey are like new signings at DM (and CB for Godfrey).

 

It has taken a while since Neil Adams signed him, for him to be ready for first team football. I just hope that his injury jinx has been defeated, because he looks like becoming a very good player.

 

Not heard much about Cantwell

 

I believe he is injured.
