Who has been the better goalkeeper for Southampton this season

Carrillo hasn't looked great so far, but he seems to be a typical hold up man. Get the ball into him and let people run off him, the only players we have who will make those runs are Long and possibly Boufal, he hasn't played with them anywhere near enough to form an opinion on him for me.

I've seen him play a couple of times for Monaco and he never stood out as being terrible or good, just a solid target man. Think people are writing him off far too early or they were expecting some kind of world beater which is incredibly harsh.

With a couple of what we will deem winnable games coming up now it will be great to see Austin back in the starting XI, I think he can provide a boost to the rest of the teams and fans alike. Ultimately we need goals and wins, no matter how we get them.

Which might have been nice to have between the 70th and 80th minute.

Anyway, on McCarthy...

Ideally him and Long will start, I think that is our best chance of creating proper chances. Long will win the ball high up the pitch which, when Tadic gets it, will hopefully make him move the ball quicker. He is very good at holding the ball up and getting us out and up the pitch, but I think he does this too often when we are looking to counter and he doesn't release the ball quick enough. It slows down our play massively and allows the other team to get back in shape, I thought it was very noticeable the last 2 games as Chelsea and Arsenal were in 2nd gear and a quick ball would really have exposed them.

If forster fumbled that he's have been strung up for days.

If it led to a goal, then yes people would've blamed him as it was a mistake. Much like if it had led to a goal yesterday then McCarthy would've been blamed. It is OK to point out why we concede goal, what we should have done better, it doesn't mean the person involved is a scapegoat.

On Twitter anyway McCarthy seems to be the latest scapegoat, verging on pariah. On one hand not too surprising given the number of goals we have shipped, but I think the defence are so much more to blame and in fact without some great saves game after game from Alex we would've suffered even heavier defeats. He's still in better form than Fraser was leading up to losing his place in the team, McCarthy just needs more protection. I think he has done OK and I would still pick him.

McCarthy has made some outstanding saves in the last few weeks. I honestly believe if Forster was in goal, we would have conceded more than 3 per game.

Carillo hasn’t shown me anything yet to suggests he is a hold up man. He is far too easily knocked off the ball. He has had lots of balls knocked in to him and no matter who is playing with him, he’s hardly ever held it which for a player if his physique is poor.
