Who has been the better goalkeeper for Southampton this season

It’s a good point re the defence though. As with all things, it’s not black and white. He’s a decent keeper who has had good spells, both personally, and behind an excellent defence. He’s just had a poor season, which may well be partly down to his mobility being effected by the injury.

But equally, was the defence playing well because Forster was there? Let's not forget the upturn in defensive record came about when Forster came back, and the stark contrast in defensive performances compared to Stekelenberg.

I don’t think it was lack of ability that proved Frasers recent down fall. I also think he is better than average. He lost confidence very suddenly not sure why. It certainly was very evident before he was dropped too many errors.

Can anyone post the shots per goal ratio of each?

Don’t really see much overall difference. Different keepers but our performance hasn’t been different.

Would you say one striker has performed better than another if neither scored goals?

Yes, absolutely. Hold up play, linking, runs, occupying opposition defences, drawing defenders out of position to create space etc etc.

Far, far, far too many people rely on stats to make a decision, instead of trusting their own eyes.

Well yes, but ultimately a striker is judged on goals scored. Which is why people call for Austin to come back in; he scores goals.

Fraser has been shaky in the past but only got dropped when he started shipping goals.

Forster - 67/101 (69.1%)
McCarthy - 25/45 (55.6%)

Interestingly, this season in PL

Fraser P20 conceded 30 . 1.5 goals/game 4 clean sheets
Alex P12 conceded 20 1.66 goals/game 2 clean sheets

Not a lot in it and actually puts Fraser in a good light?

I'm on the fence, happy with both.

EDIT: take out last two games for McCarthy and last game for fraser (for fairness)

Fraser 1.31
Alex 1.4

So really similar ....Statistically :)

Did Fraser benefit from the games when VVD was playing? And before Lemina went on holiday?

That's the problem, stats for goalkeepers and defenders are hard. Or to put it another way, if De Gea isn't winning your preferred stat by miles, then it's wrong. And we know that because we can watch him and he is clearly the best. Personally I thought Forster's worst spell was while McCarthy was injured which was a bit unfortunate for us, but they are both basically fine.

Just to clarify, I don’t think there is a huge difference between them, but I absolutely think AM has had a better season, and is the better choice currently. Stats can inform a debate, but they are certainly not defining measures.
