Who has been the better goalkeeper for Southampton this season

Just checking that I haven't come back from France through a wormhole and stepped into a parallel dimension.

In your opinion, who has played better as a keeper for Southampton this season?

Can I also just clarify - this isn't a slight on the person that you don't choose. It's just an opinion as to who you feel has had the better season.

Wondered if you’d post this & very glad you did. Was gonna suggest after reading last eve’s discussions but had a very strong feeling you would.

Not surprised at the 95%. Who are the 5%?

If Forster was still in goal, we'd be down already.
Not so sure.

I agree McCarthy has done a very good job since he has come in but I feel Fraser was made a bit of a scapegoat. He was being blamed every time we didn't win, Alex has not improved us winning. Just like Steven Davis was getting the blame for our poor results, he hasn't been playing, results haven't improved. Van dijk the bad apple, leaves, no improvement, Pellegrino, Gabbiadini etc etc. Our position is not just down to one person, it's a collective.

You can see who's voted for what <ok>

I dunno mate. Some people have decided to have a pop when I pipe up it seems! When the questions go back, they fall silent, so make of that what you will.

Posters may recall how staunchly I defended Fraser and the abuse he took. I voted McCarthy. Forget stats or any other opinion or if goals could have been saved or would have been let in, McCarthy looks more confident (than the this season FF) and makes me feel more confident. That made me vote for him.

Maybe. I never once criticised Davis though, and Ive not been as harsh on Pellegrino as most. With a keeper, I think you have the most vital position on the pitch. A striker can afford to miss two chances before scoring on his third. You can't afford the keeper the same luxury.

Fraser seems like a nice bloke, but his confidence was shot by December.

But you're right. The whole squad has had a shocker.

I love these threads, we should do them for all members of the team.

Well I thought it interesting that I was told I was wrong in my supposition that Alex had played better this season, because stats.

But it seems, as I suspected, that the overwhelming majority of people are wrong with me. Unfortunately @Dell1964 who raised that doesn’t appear to want to defend his comments.

I voted for McCarthy......but not because of ability as I feel both have equal ability. Fraser Sadly has lost a hell of a lot of confidence and it was showing on the pitch. He wasn't helped by the unknowledgeable fans behind his goal booing him. This affected him more than people realise.
I do wish these people would try to understand that booing a player is not going to help him play better. Players need encouragement it helps them enormously.......If only some of the youngsters could understand this..........

I agree that overall the abilities are similar. Different strengths and weaknesses of course. I wonder though quite how much the injury took out of him.

Disagree with this. The decline started with that mistake at Palace, fans got on his back and it went downhill since.

Remember how good he looked under Koeman, but post-injury? Even the early Puel days.

You may well be right actually. Somehow in my head I link it back to the injury (and I think his mobility suffered from that) but yes, he did have a very good run.

When we had one of the best defences in the league you mean?

He's never been that good, average at best. The injury though killed off the little mobility he had.

Each to their own ...

It’s a good point re the defence though. As with all things, it’s not black and white. He’s a decent keeper who has had good spells, both personally, and behind an excellent defence. He’s just had a poor season, which may well be partly down to his mobility being effected by the injury.
