I like Whitby. Was there a couple of years ago. One of the fish'n chip caffs was clearly trying to up it's game, monkfish tail, halibut mornay, that sort of thing. But the menu still said at the bottom 'all served with tea and bread and butter'.
I went to Whitby for the weekend in November and really enjoyed it. John Cooper Clark was checking into the hotel as I was checking out. I'd recommend eating at The Marine (you have to book in advance, it's always fully booked on a weekend) and the same people own the Moon and Sixpence bar just up the road, where you can get a really good breakfast.
The last time I was in Whitby was on July 7, 2004. I remember the date because it was the same as the temperature, 7 degrees. The sky was grey and about two feet above our heads, the sea was grey with a cold wind howling in from the east. It drizzled (horizontally) off and on but I recall there was an elderly couple bundled up in overcoats scarves and hats sitting in deck chairs on the beach. "Ah tell thee love, nowts gunna spoil our seaside pleasure!" We had fish and chips of course, probably at The Magpie, and then buggered off back to Gilling (near Richmond) where we'd rented a cottage. That said, I have had a few good times in Whitby in the past.
Nearly died when drinking beer from a glass boot in a bar in Salzberg. When the angle of the boot gets to a specific point the ****ing lot pours out really quickly and goes up your nose and drowns you.
That as far as I get with work. Actually I'm lying, it's less of a journey than my everyday commute. It was a miserable day, but with respect to any goolies, what a ****ing dump.
I was thinking about it for a stag-do, but apparently it’s much more foodie than boozy. Might do Valencia instead.
I was only there for a day( stopped off as part of a cruise) so I’m hardly an expert on the place. Much preferred it to Gijon, Corunna or Santander. Some great little bars and cafes but don’t expect anyone to speak English because they don’t. It’s a huge city and the area near the port has some lovely villas, never stopped in that area but it would be worth a butchers if you’re there for 5 days.
