I do hope too that he is the answer to our defensive problems. But this spending of £75m is way outside our usual MO. Have we decided to "buy trophies" like the mancs, the oil backed City and Chelsea ?

To put this buy into context, we could have bought 2 Salahs for the money. Or bought De Bruyne and have enough spare change to get a decent quality full back. The Saints had us over a barrel and we've given in.

Yes, FSG are splashing the cash now and we have broken our transfer record 3-4 times this year.

We’re buying a ready made player who ticks all the boxes we need for a defender in our system, in his prime and is also a leader. He could prove to be invaluable if hits the ground running because he could improve the players around him as well.

I never thought we would buy a defender for £75m, smashing the current world record by a wide margin. Even City with its unlimited petrodollars thought he was too expensive. So it is now looking certain that Coutinho will go, probably for £130m+ for this deal to balance the books.

Southampton as usual got what they wanted from us. Getting rid of an unwanted player for an extortionate amount of dough. As you say, he'd better deliver. But he'll be under the pressure of huge expectations now. He is expected to massively improve a crumbling defence and every little fault will be dissected.
To be fair to the player, the price tag is not his fault (same with Pogba and all the other over-priced buys), but it will be a millstone around his neck. Unless he's on the top of his game it will be mentioned incessantly.

It will be Andy Caroll all over again.

Because they both have pony tails.

We wanted him and, after a fight, we got him. Klopp will probably live or die (figuratively) by this decision, but he was sure. He's probably only 'worth' £50m - but we couldn't get him for that. We could have got three Lovrens for £75m though, and a wage bill @ £450k a week. United, City and Chelsea have been paying a 33% purchase tax on players for decades now - we are no longer poor, and when the final (for now) ground extensions kick in, we'll be richer

. Most of all though is the Prem deal: this is the problem with Barca going around with a £200m cheque in their pocket trying to get top players on the cheap, on the never-never, and with ludicrous add-ons too. We'll have to get used to paying that tax, but FFS - it's better than Moneyball and a squad full of Markovich's.

Drop in the ocean compared to the tv money

I hope he is the type that thrives on pressure and high expectations. He'll no doubt have those in big proportions. I can already see the headlines whenever there is a mishap" £75m Liverpool defender gets this or world record breaking defender does that"
