I was in Hull last weekend. Walked through town from Holy Trinity as far as Debenhams. It's a pretty depressing experience. The buildings, pavements, installations, etc look brilliant but the 'shopping experience' is dog-****e.Too many empty units and too many crap shops. Whitefriargate should be the jewel in the crown, entering past the old city gate into the beautifully renovated street, but there's not a shop down there you want to set foot in let alone buy anything from(apart from shop selling dead bod t-shirts). Even M&S looks like it's on the brink of closing down.
Unless there's a rapid incoming of jobs and people with money to spend I can see it getting worse before it gets better, sadly.
Isn't whitefrigate owned by Trinity house. Who charge astronomic rents for the shops.Agree 100% regards whitefriargate while a lot of work has gone into upgrading the pavement etc, the heart (shops) have gone out of it. I
always come over to Hull early on match days and have a wander around the city centre although on the last mid-week game against Boro, felt embarrassed to be from Hull, in Queen Victoria sq a group of visitors( from the far east i think) on a tour by the looks, were stood outside the maritime museum ,a city of culture volunteer was talking to them as a group ,on benches nearby were a group of street drinkers every second word coming from these lowlife appeared to be "****" and the odd "****s" thrown in for good measure i must have been 20/30 yards away as i passed and i could hear them clearly so they must have, when i think back the only time i've seen police in the centre away from pubs where fans are gathering are two armed one's stood outside city hall last saturday.
Don't know if lower rent/rates would solve the problem but something needs to happen. The rest of the old town is pretty special now, it would become spectacular if Whitefriargate was thriving.Isn't whitefrigate owned by Trinity house. Who charge astronomic rents for the shops.
