In this video Vitesse Arnhem have a penalty denied, it goes down the other end, Feyenoord score. Then the ref hears on his headset that perhaps he should have given a penalty rather than let play carry on. He consults the video, decides to disallow the Feyenoord goal and gives a penalty to Vitesse!

We should have had this here years ago! That’s a perfect example of its benefits!

Right decision made, big turn in the game, worth the wait.

Opponents of VAR will say it's a perfect example of how it slows the game down. It looked to me as though the fans were loving it!

If there were VAR when Maradona threw the ball into the net, we'd have won the World cup.

    I'm absolutely certain of that.

I'm not really a strong opponent of VAR (although not an advocate either) but I'm certainly against it being used long after play has continued like this, that's ridiculous.

I know what you mean but I don't think that example constitutes 'long after play'. The right decision got made and no-one could feel cheated, it was absolutely a nailed-on penalty.

The problem for the ref was at the time he was getting it in the ear (from the official )the break in play was the goal! It could have been a throw in ideally but then it wouldn't have made it on this thread?

Unless it can be made instant it shouldn't happen. Once the game restarts after a decision is made that has to be the end of it. It'd be a farce if not.

But the ref has to be told he’s maybe made the wrong call on review and then he had to stop play when the balls dead! It worked perfectly!

I don't call that perfect and I don't think the guy who scored for Feyenoord would think so ever. You can't have a situation where players and supporters don't even know whether the football they're watching will count as having happened or not. It has to be either a penalty or play on, not both.

If it cuts out complete cock ups it works for me! The feyenoord player who scored ended up exactly where he should have been and that’s watching his keeper trying to save a pen!

Was it Rodwell who put one in with his hand against us a few years back? There’s way too many cock ups that can cost teams millions for this not to be introduced! Ask the Irish after Henry’s hand! And it’s entertaining waiting for the decision!

Indeed it was, wasn't it the game where Gus was sent to the stand for GBH to a parcel of water bottles?

But I don't think what we see in that clip is farcical. The right decision got made, the crowd seemed to enjoy the tension, the game wasn't held up for much longer than when a player gets injured and it's not as though it's going to happen every 10 minutes. Yes the Feyenoord lads will be a bit cheesed off but no more than any other time they have a goal disallowed.

Minor point PLT but you say "once the game restarts....end of it" errrr in this instance there wasn't a stop in play, it continued down the other end. So the ref did the right thing imho.

For me this is a perfect example. The referee had a perfect view of it, it was clearly a foul; not even close to the ball. A total injustice.

I'm just surprised he had the balls to use the VAR as it highlights his incompetence.

Perfect example of what? Good use of VAR or referee-ing mistakes?
