there isn't anyone I can think of that would influence me to go see a movie just because they are in it, but there are actors whose body of work I greatly admire.

from the current crop:

Jake Gyllenhaal
Mads Mikkelsen
Michael Sheen
Brendan Gleeson

going back further, Burton, O'Toole, Bogart, Olivier

john alderton, dorothy mackaill, william mervyn, maureen lipman, tom courtenay, ian carmichael, etc.

Met John Alderton and his kids. Mum and Dad used to own the shop his family owned. His Sister also lived a few doors down - Jackie Alderton.

I like Adam Sandler films. You know what you are going to get, it's fun and enjoyable. I can understand him being many people's favourite. There are many snobs out there who will dismiss such movies but hey ho, each to their own. I personally am glad he got a mention on the thread, I find discussions like this tend to either go for old people who are obviously way better than new people, or as obscure as possible to look cultured and cool or for the usual awards, up themselves, borefest types.

Personally my favourite actor is Lee Otway who played Bombhead in Hollyoaks. He once had a very underrated role in an episode of Heartbeat.

Saw him smashed off his tits in Sugar Mill once.

Not at all. Just tired of people thinking it's not ok to have a different opinion. Then you get the predicteable list of people chipping in.

The comments (well mine) were about the actors in your list, not your opinion of them; there is a difference ...

I'm giving Tin Star a go purely because Tim Roth is in it.

I like Stephen Graham but put Tom Hardy ahead of him as a recent British actor. From my generation I still look out for Phil Daniels & Timothy Spall.

I think Roth is a one trick pony, he ruined Funny Games for me. Also he's no Idris Elba when it comes to the American accent. The original is great though. Timothy Spall's always decent. Tom Hardy is quality.

Even though it was Haneke who did the English speaking version, I sincerely couldn't be arsed. The original is ausgezeichnet.

Love a lot of Haneke's films: Time of the Wolf, Cache, Benny's Video... off the top

Olivia Colman, not seen her be anything but brilliant in a whole range of roles
Local(ish) favourite Sheridan Smith
As many have said, Tom Hardy, although Hollywood seems to be turning him into a bigger star and worse actor

Daft comedy greats - Wilder and Pryor. Love Gene Wilder.

Used to love Steve Martin stuff when I was a kid growing up - Man With Two Brains, Dirty Rotten, PT&A, All of Me

If I recall correctly, it all turned sour and **** for evermore from Parenthood
I wouldn't exactly call Martin a good actor myself, but Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is brilliant
