I think we're best off getting rid now so we can sort out a replacement and start preparing properly for next season. If we're gambling on VVD changing his mind then that's a bit of a risk in terms of how we go in to next season. I know Stephens is a good prospect, but we were tanking goals with him & Yoshida last season.

If you look at the silly money that is being spent on players and compare it with the amount we received for Mane we really need to get top dollar to make up for that as Mane is looking very cheap

This is from Tom on SaintsWeb (he was the first one to break the VVD training alone news a few hours before MoPe confirmed it)

VVD has met personally with LR twice in the last two days (disclaimer: one of those could have been a phone call). Fairly amicable meetings by all accounts given the circumstances and the fact that they basically hate each other. LR apparently is open to the idea of selling VVD providing a) the offer meets our valuation (sorry, I don't know what that is) and b) the deal is done with at least three weeks of the transfer window remaining to give us enough time to get a top quality replacement. In light of VVd's stance, we have stepped up our monitoring of the CB targets on our list and starting informal discussions with clubs. LR and VVD discussed Liverpool; both parties recognise that selling him to Liverpool would be a hugely unpopular move with our fanbase, even though Saints believe they will get the most money from Liverpool. Apparently, VVD has softened a little and would consider moving to another top club besides Liverpool. He's totally hell bent on leaving though. Interesting development - apparently Chelsea have indicated to VVD's agent that they no longer have an interest. He was definitely talking to them a few months back but he picked Liverpool over them so perhaps understandable that they've moved on but when you consider they've lost Terry, Zouma and Ake, they are short at the position. As things stand, there are no bids for him at all but the feeling is that won't be the case for long now the news is out.

Is this a new moniker for Jack Schitt, not heard of an ITK called Tom from SaintsWeb before. All sounds like supposition to me. Some of it doesn't sound believable either.

So basically what I told (with more new info), but I wanted him to change his mind.

I was told Van Dijk was going and wanted to go and all it would take is a fee Saints want like a month ago (posted here). So the guy has that part right. Not hard to imagine the rest is right.

I don't doubt that, it's been apparent for some time that VVD wants out. I'm not surprised that we would have a price at which we would sell either, that's pretty standard. It just seems like a very Jack Schitt style post, that makes out like it's ITK with lots of new info whereas it doesn't tell us anything new. There's just a lot of filler that anyone could have made up around what we already know.

Nope. Can't let players force their way out like that. Can't let a team make the sort of approach Liverpool did and then turn around and sell to them.

I agree, selling him to the Scousers would stick in my craw, but I can't see a way back into our squad for him now.

I can see a way back. Players threaten to strike far more than they actually strike, because doing so is generally detrimental to their career and future transfer prospects. Can't keep allowing ourselves to be rolled on transfers, particularly if genuinely top-dollar bids are not forthcoming.

Not great for team morale having your captain behaving like that and the fans won't forget plus I wouldn't sell him for less than £70m under any circumstance.

Particularly bad for morale when the team captain of a year ago did much the same sort of thing and left in January. This is a petulant strop too far and Les must stand firm.
