Leeds United vs Hull City match thread

I often see that claim made and I have no doubt that it used to be true, but with the massively increased Premier League exposure in Asia and Africa over recent years, I suspect there's a few hundred million supporters internationally who don't even know who Leeds United are and I'll be surprised if you make the top twenty nowadays. I'm a frequent visitor to the Far East and if you go to the markets that sell knock off replica shirts, you won't find any Leeds United ones for sale.

That survey was carried out after the foreign PL boom and well after we were relegated from the PL. We may not have many fans in the far east but we have a huge fanbase in Scandinavia, especially Norway.

Look at 2 of the top 3 languages used to search for "leeds united" on Google: http://www.google.com/trends?q=leeds+united

These are the trends for us compared with a few mid-top PL sides: http://www.google.com/trends?q=leed...erland&ctab=0&geo=no&geor=all&date=all&sort=0

How apt, for someone that uses Google searches as proof of fan base. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Why would Google searches not be reliable? Search 'Leeds news', something only a Leeds fan would type, on Google Trends if you don't believe there's big worldwide interest.

Is that a genuine question?

Most people I know have 'News now' saved with Hull City as default, so google searchs wouldn't be needed by City fans. I know fans of other clubs do the same. Simply searching for 'Leeds news' could be a handful of people making lots of searches.

All in all, it's meaningless to use for any real measure of fan base.

Last season, Leeds had the 55th highest average attendance in Europe. I think that's pretty damn good for a 2nd Division team who had spent the previous 3 years in the 3rd division. That makes us the 13th most supported club (based solely on attendances) in England. We are one of only 3 Championship clubs to have made it on the list.

If you factor in our high ticket prices and lack of concession tickets around the ground, I'd say we were pricing out other supporters. We have a club membership of 40,000 and have low season ticket sales compared to our average attendances.

Perhaps, as long as you totally ignore minor issues like ground capacities.:emoticon-0105-wink:

Seeing as you're so keen on stats do you care to tell where Leeds is on the list of largest European cities with 1 professional football team?

I doubt that anyone has worked that out, and tbh I don't care. People were arguing about Leeds' fanbase, so I gave the statistic that we were the 13th best home supported club (not including our fantastic away following) in England. You can argue about whether we should have more etc. but there are also things such as the high ticket prices, economic factor, the fact that over 15% of Leeds' population are from non-British backgrounds, the lack of concessions tickets etc. These are all subjective, but the thing that is certain is Leeds had the 13th largest average attendance in England last season.

I don't care about Leeds fans from Leeds itself. It's their fans that turned their backs on City & who latched onto them winning from Hull and East Yorkshire, those who also belittled City when they were in Europe and we were in the doldrums and financially buggered, who i dislike.

Hull Whites are bellends, the lot of them.

Golaccio, I think that's a very parochial view to take. People will always support the more successful team from down the road, even if it's considered heresy in their hometown. Thousands in Leeds support Man U and Liverpool and still claim to be proud Yorkshiremen and proud Loiners who love their city as much as Leeds fans do. And I can kind of accept that. I guess you just have to accept sometimes that football is too powerful to be restricted by boundaries. Success is magnetic, and I'll bet you there are people who are Leeds born and bred who support Hull. It's not a rare sight to see someone parading round the city in a black and amber shirt these days. You win some, you lose some. I'd be a very bitter man indeed if I begrudged the team affiliation of half the people living in my city!
