That's peanuts in todays market. He's a European winning international and his contract doesn't run out for a year and a half. I was hoping for closer to £10m

Puel was just asked about potential Fonte replacements in his press conference, he brought the conversation straight back round to Jack Stephens and Gardos...

Of course he would say that. He isn't going to say "we need to get a new cb as some of ours aren't good enough".

£5m isn't that bad.

If there is one thing that history has taught us, its that you shouldn't bother pinning your hopes on those coming back from long term injuries.
Anything they can give you should be considered a bonus, if you are relying on them to save you. you are already in trouble.

Plus the guy has been injured about 5 times in a row.
 
Odd that the Press are saying Jose is having a medical at WHU while Mr Puel says he was training normally with the squad this morning!
 
5 million isn't that bad considering Fonte's age and especially the fact that we don't intend to use him anymore which lowers his price a lot. If he hasn't requested transfer and is still a part of the team, then I would expect a fee around 10 million.

If he hadn't of put in a transfer request we would have had to pay off the rest of his contract (circa £4m?) so the £5m is pure profit and drops our wage bill quite considerably especially if the club don't replace him (lets hope they damn well do!)

Not impossible. It doesn't take that long to get from Southampton to London.
