Virgil is the key to January for me.

If he goes, keen to look at next season. Young centre half, promising striker, maybe a gamble at number 10. Certainly no loans - I don't see the value at that point.

If he stays at least until the summer then we can look up the table, a quick fix loan up front or a goalscoring midfielder in his prime would then make sense.

If we kept all our squad this summer and added we could realistically push for top4. But i doubt that will happen.

Even the media has caught up with that thought. Hence the occasional articles loosely titled "Just imagine what Southampton FC would be like if they kept all their stars?"

I think the club know this. It's convincing the players, who get the grass-is-greener look.

Here's my take. Virgil is going nowhere. Since the Pochettino summer, I'm sure we've not sold a player with more than two years left on his contract. Add in that there's been a clear move to tie players into longer-term contracts and the sum, IMO, is that VVD's staying at least until there's only a couple of years left on his paperwork.

I may well fall flat on my face on this one but, apart possibly from José, I see no-one leaving in January and Oriol and Cuco being the leavers next summer. And you can quote me.

I agree, though I suspect it'll depend also on Virgil's attitude come the summer and the bids, and the size of the bid. I think if we're talking £50m he'll be off.

I think you're right. Certainly about the two-years-left thing. I also think Oriol might extend his contract. Cuco may indeed move on, which would be a shame, simply because he's so likeable.

I wish I shared your optimism about Oriol. We'll have offered a contract a while ago. The fact that he hasn't signed yet seems ominous to me. We'll see.
