Problem was, they put someone to block off Evandro, (who was there to stop Benteke's run), leaving Benteke a free stroll onto the ball- it was obvious we needed another blocker in there. Shambles

Using Evandro on his own to try and block off 3 runners today- one of theirs simply blocked Evandro, allowing Tomkins and Benteke a free run in every time....joke strategy. Zonal marking might work, at least if you gave yourself a chance. Should have had N'Diaye blocking off- let them and try and get round him!

I thought high jumpers were polo necks.

But, more seriously, I recall being measured by this Sargent Jump Test

Nothing to do with run ups.

But I think the point is someone running and jumping would go higher than someone with a standing jump, which presumably is why you're not allowed to for that test?

I don't want to bore everyone (was going to pick you up on the jump post before) but it's transference of horizontal to vertical momentum - from a standing start you have less kinetic energy to transfer into the jump.

You're supposed to use smaller players to block and taller players to mark zones. We needed more than Evandro doing it as they overloaded each time.

I think you need a full preseason to get players playing a completely different way than they are used to.

The amount of goals we've shipped from set plays and corners does kind of suggest that zonal marking is bollocks!

Considering we shipped far more goals before Marco arrived, it really doesn't.

    We've been **** on set-pieces, whatever system we've played.

Somebody put the stats up then

Saying zonal marking never works is clearly not true , unless people are saying it doesn't work in this country

We've also changed our centre halves. So the first half of the season is probably more down to personnel. The second half of the season and our piss poor attempts at defending set pieces has almost entirely been down to zonal marking.

That's somewhat overstating it, we added Ranocchia for the past fifteen games, it was hardly a radical overhaul of our defence.

The reality is that we shipped far more goals under Phelan than we have under Marco.

I'm not a fan of zonal marking, but the reality is we've been equally **** under both systems.

I not a lover of zonal marking but the fact is the right ball whipped in to a well timed run by Benteke usually has one end result.

I don't think if Harry, Daws or Nokia had been man to man with him they'd have stopped him from scoring.

He's beast in the air, on a par with Carroll as the best in the PL and maybe Europe.

    IMO.

I haven't checked but I don't think Maguire featured regularly in the early days.
