Cameron like most leaders got too arrogant that he'd win the vote easily and crush the far right in his party once and for all...he was thinking about his legacy...then utterly ****ed up his strategy in presenting it to the people who could have done just that for him. Now, even if he wins he's terminally weakened as well as his chosen successors. Tbf I think his rivals are in the same position.
