Always wondered about this scenario but why can the Middle East, china and Russia NEVER seem to be able or willing to accept democracy, surely as nations advance through the decades democracy must prevail or is it just in their DNA they can’t handle it

Excluding Israel, none of the Middle East countries have ever had anything approaching democracy and the main reason is that Islamic theocracy has always been able to terrorise the people. Islam there has never been about staying home, working to make life better for the people. It has always been about attempting to expand its territory and overthrow non-islamic and secular neighbours

Jordan and Egypt struggle with a democratic leaning, but know that Islamic fundamentalism can easily overthrow their systems.

Even the Israeli model of democracy is flawed as small parties hold power disproportionate to their electorate.

Czarist Russia was a mediaeval fudal state and its transition to a democratic state was strangled at birth by the bolshevics. The fall of communism brought in a massive financial shock for its people that looked back at communism and saw financial stability, so labelled democracy as a bad thing. Yeltsin's drive into free market democracy was arrested by the rise of Putin (and I strongly suspect a KGB hand on the tiller in this). Russians gave up democracy for stability and this is confirmed by the fact that Putin's one defeat was trying to raise the retirement age.

China never even had democracy after the fall of the last emperor, but transitioned straight to multiple feudal regions under the domination of local warlords and thence to communism. The only thing that ever changed was the leadership. Of all the peoples in the world, I think the Chinese are the furthest from democracy - politically and philosophically.

Since 1967 Israel has occupied the West Bank with it's 2.8 million Palestinians.

They have no rights. Israel is determined that there will never be a Palestinian state. But they are not Israeli citizens either.

That's not democracy. It's apartheid.
And Hamas, funded by Iran, and the elected governing body in Palestine, have publicly stated that their one aim is to eradicate Israel and every single Jew. That’s not democracy either is it? It’s a genocidal death cult.
The fact is we all have opinions on what is happening in the Middle East, especially the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
Unless we have lived in that part of the world and had families living there for generations then our poorly informed opinions, mine included, don’t really mean much do they? We only know what the news outlets tells us. There is a couple of verses in the Ozzy Osbourne song Crazy Train, written as a response to the Cold War which is rather appropriate I think.

I've listened to preachers
I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts
Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role

Heirs of a cold war
That's what we've become
Inheriting troubles I'm mentally numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
I'm living with something' that just isn't fair

Pleased i'm not in Abu Dhabi anymore, friends I have are reporting dropping shrapnel from downed missiles falling on the golf course they were playing yesterday. Dangerous times for all those expats in the UAE

We have over 40000 on Mi5s books who are jihadists.
So don't think we are untouchable.
The cult of Islam is amongst us.
So you over 65s grab your pitch forks and broom shanks and muster at the village halls.

I woke up to the exciting news that the evil dictator and supreme leader had been assassinated ...

... a man who believes his fanatical ideology is more important than the rule of law and who's supporters blindly follow.

Then I realised they weren't talking about Donald Trump.
You really are dumb

Greame? That reminds me of all the Asian clothes shops in Leicester, where you could buy kids tracksuits made by Aridas, Roebock, New Valance. Saved me a fortune they did. I was told about them by my mate Gary Pineker.
Knows him that well he can't spell his name ;)
