Seems a bit of an odd strategy - ensure NATO stay away from your border by moving your border closer to NATO. Plus it's not the eighties any more. The US have had thirty years of technological and tactical development while Russia was busy being taken over by gangsters. Nobody I know has even been put on standby.
The UK and US are saying its okay that we illegally occupy the Chagos Islands because if we don't the Chinese will take it. Also telling Putin that he better not illegally occupy land that isn't his.
No real winners out of this... lots of people will die and for what? It Will also bring the possibility of Nuclear warfare into the equation which will bring unimaginable worldwide suffering.... not sure after that you would say who won what
And off they go, back to base. Putin gets what he wants - treated like a big player, getting everyone to dance round him.
What with his mean glare? The Turks showed just what Putin is a few years ago when they shot one of his Migs down that was flying in Turkish airspace trying to stop Isis from selling oil over the Turkish border. Hes a bully who's reputation precedes him but has nothing to back it up when someone gives him a bloody nose. He did absolutely nothing in response cos he knows he would get more than he bargained for. The West needs to be much more bold in its response to the playground bully, that will have the added benefit of making the Chinese stop and think hard before pissing us off too. The sad thing is I think if he goes into Ukraine he will have his own government installed in Kiev within 2 weeks as I really don't think there will be much resistance to him, in the same way Afghanistan rolled over in minutes when us and the Americans left. Ukraine is all about getting NATO to sort things out we should walk away and deal with it once the Russians are lined up at the borders of the EU. There's literally nothing in it for the UK at the moment. We dont even rely on Russian gas.
We should have helped this fella, but no we ( capitalism ) gloated over its victory, Gorbachev served as the last general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1985–91) as well as the last president of the Soviet Union (1990–91). Both as general secretary and as president, Gorbachev supported democratic reforms.
Anybody who thinks the UK is capable of taking on Russia must be high as a kite. Their armed forces is at least 10 times the size of ours but probably a fair bit more. The US, Russia and China are way out in front of everybody else when it comes to military power. https://www.forces.net/news/russia-vs-britain-how-do-militaries-stack I agree with you that we should walk away. It's none of our business. I don't know why we should get involved if they get to the EU borders? We've left the EU, that has nothing to do with us either. I'll be concerned if the Red army rock up in Calais but until then it's none of our business and we should keep our noses out.
Nobody has said the UK could match Russia. Of course we can't! What I am saying is that if the Ukraine want to move to a direction of their own choice away from the east and towards the west then Russia should have no say. If Russia were on the Canadian border etc is a hypothetical arguement. Canada have the west's ideals. It would never happen. Russia are just bullies. They bully little countries around them.
What about our membership of NATO - don't you think we might be involved a little bit before the Red Army hit Calais?
Disagree with this. We are part of NATO and have European partners. Can’t turn our back whilst parts of Europe burn and say we are only concerned if they try and invade us. If it comes to it, Russia will be the enemy and I’d expect all Brits to be behind the cause.
Crush UK, not crush NATO. Until fairly recently it's been postulated that the US had the power to fight two wars vs Russia and China. I doubt that's the case anymore but NATO would defeat Russia.
