tbh I don't think anyone can know what they'd do.
One day you might step in but on another you wouldn't...lots of things could affect the decision.
In WW1 many of those shot as cowards had done incredibly brave things days earlier.

To criticise people for not potentially risking their lives was a ****ty thing for the old bill to do.

My (then 5 yr old) daughter was once threatened by a racist **** when I was coming out of a local shop. I was with her and her (then baby) sister in a pram. I ended up smacking him after ramming him into a parked van. There were about 20 or so people at 2 bus stops within 20 feet, a security guard and dozens in the shop. It didn't annoy me that no one came to help but it ****ed me off beyond belief that not one of the ****ers called the old bill.
I know that cos I made the shop call the police and they were shocked that no one else called.

Some of this kind of underlines the problem with 'have a go heroes'. What if somebody had seen you lumping this **** and decided that you were the perpetrator and jumped you ? I'm not sure it's ever good advice from the police to be encouraging people to get involved in fights. Although I admit, it's a tough call, because every situation is different.

P.s. Well done for smacking the racist twat.

I think it very much depends on your 'natural reaction' at the time ... my missus always urges me not to get involved because of what might happen to me and what that might mean for her, the kids, etc ... but I've always hated any kind of bullying or unfair fight and would find it difficult to do 'nothing' ...

When I was in my 20s one of my cousins and me were walking through the city centre after kick-out time when we happened on a bloke and his missus at a taxi rank having a heated row - lots of people in the queue just laughing at them - she was screaming like a banshee at him and eventually he just full on punched her in the mush, knocking her down - people in the queue didn't want to get involved but we stepped in and tried to reason with him - he started swinging at us but was so pissed he couldn't lay one on either of us - she gets up off the floor, she's as pissed as him it turns out, takes her shoe off then tries to whack both me and my cousin over the head with the heel <doh> ... with that we left them to it <laugh> ...

that is a really common thing .
was in a car with a girlfriend about 30 yrs ago and saw a geezer being a right **** to a girl...my girlfriend slowed down asked if she was ok and got told to go **** herself....by the girl <doh>

Or you may have many years trained in it. Its not hard to restrain someone. (it it hard to restrain them without hurting them)
<laugh> ok hard nut.

you're talking to wrong person here. if there's one daft **** on this board that would probably help, it would probably be me, and even i'm not daft enough to say i would step in. sometimes it's ****ing stupid to be a hero, so less of the bravado man.

Duncs problem is he focuses only on the black crime, as that is the one that the media portrays most (make of that what you will).

There's a lot of chavvy (and some not chavvy) bastards out there carrying knives and stabbing also.

I don't think he does, he sees reality. A lot of black crime is seldom reported, the media are happy to say they are looking for a couple of skinny dips but they will never say they are looking for a couple of blacks with hoodies on. They will always have the hoods up btw, that's the tools of their living on the arse trade.. <ok>

It's true that you don't know how you'll act in a situation like that until you face it and you could act differently on different days.

I always assumed that if someone robbed me that I'd just hand everything over but when it happened I managed to think calmly and only lose a small amount.

If I had had a few more beers though there's a good chance I would have got myself hurt, or if I was feeling down I might have just handed things over perhaps. You just don't know.

In my opinion when you face a situation like that your brain will work quicker than you act in assessing all the factors and then you'll go on instinct.
