I just don't think a tournament is the stage to be playing for the future. It is a be all and end all. We get stuck in this thought whilst the rest are there to win it.
The odd one will never be good enough compared to a team of winners such as Spain with all but the odd few of their national team representatives playing for the top 2 teams in the league..as an example...so the Delph's and Livermore's of this world wont be good enough id say.
I'd say we've got a good chance of getting through the group. Italy are strong throughout but Uruguay have strikers and that is it. Provided we can keep the ball, the players selected certainly have the ability, we can outplay them. It'll be a competition with Italy to see who comes top. Top the group, and we'll have the weaker team from group C, come second and we'll probably get Columbia. Either way it isn't disastrous so with this team we could potentially get to the quarter finals which is further than last time. The young guys we've got in the squad can experience being in a quarter final in Brazil, which will help when they become the bigger guys in future tournaments.
On the Spain point, yes they're a team of winners. The FA's potential plans will hopefully go some way to rectifying the lack of top home players in the PL when compared to Spain, Italy and Germany.
