Big Pierre was great, if only Celtic had paid him more than a road sweeper. For those
of us who are old enough and lucky enough George Connolly was probably the best
Celtic player of the last 40 years. His depression and alcoholism curtailed his
playing career but he really was something at either centre half or centre
midfield . Great pity his illnesses couldn't be controlled.

We have to define world class first.
Top 10 or top 20 in their position or
Top world 11 at their peak. Unless we define world class this becomes a nebulous piece of poor judgement backed by personal favouritism.
My own personal def is top 10 in their position at the time. In the LL we had 3 who would have qualified in 67, jimmy, bobby and tommy. Di Stefano twice tried to bring jimmy and then jimmy and tommy to RM. Nereo Rocco and Rivera said bobby was world class, the latter in 69 said bobby was the best midfield player in Europe and Happel was also very complimentary about him.
Since then, I think Lambert, who marked ZZ out of the EC final was world class at BD in his position. Henrik also, possibly Di Canio. Danny certainly, as he was only 1 of 3 Scottish players to be called world class by Alf Ramsey, the other 2 being Law and jimmy.
As to Sutton etc....... Not in my eyes. Remember we are talking world class, not Celtic class or international class. Packy might be in there, as might Boruc, given their position. Damn few others tho.

Good stuff Alb - only slight disagreement I have is Christopher Roy Sutton, as I think he could have made it at any level if he was committed enough and of whom the King of Kings himself was reported to have said was the most intelligent footballer with whom he ever played.

Modern era there was Larsson for definite...

Then you have to look at great players - not world class but great!

lubo
dicanio
lambert
boruc
petrov

then there's really good players

Got a feeling that WANYAMA could well go on to be regarded as world class in his role, but unfortunately I think we will not see his peak at CP.

Being brutally honest, only Larsson from my time watching Celtic would make the grade. Maybe McGrain, but he was in his mid-late 30s by the time I saw him play.

AP Password Mong. Some people go to any lengths to cut ten years or so off
their age. Are you surfeit wasn't King Billie who you saw in his mid thirties.

Larsson, Moravcik and Lambert were world class.

Boruc, Petrov and Sutton, no.

Hooper and Brown Pud <laugh> seriously? Championship players.

Wanyama, no chance, good player due to his physical qualities, but in terms of technical ability and brains he will never be world class, well in my definition of world class. If you want to say best players for a position or role then he might become one of the best defensive midfielders, but for me to consider a player world class, the technical ability and football brain has to be exceptional.

Moravcik is the most naturally gifted player ive seen at Parkhead, and that includes all the great players who played against us over the last 15 years. Ive seen practically all the great players in Europe of the last 15 years at Parkhead apart from Zidane, and only Ronaldinho would sit next to Moravcik.

Boruc made the save of the season last night at Old Trafford a header from Van Persie . Remember one of the champion league games there he made save after save . Without a doubt world class .

Harry , what about Carrick and the UTD goalie, aren't we lucky we don't have
Defensive midfielder and a goalie like those two. Carrick would be getting a right few bob
Every week.

The other thread got me thinking. How many truly elite players have we had since Jinky?

McGrain
Larsson
Dalglish
Roy Keane

Is that it?

Roy Keane was past it when he was with us but had been at that level.

Can cases be made for;

McStay
Moravcik
Nicholas
McClair
Boruc
Collins
Ian Wright
Juninho
Robbie Keane
Lambert
Petrov

I want to push a couple of them higher up and I am sure I have left out a few obvious ones.

Whaddayareckon?

<rofl>

Honestly?
