Reoccurring injury is a worry though
He's young and likely still growing into his body. IIRC Steven Gerrard had loads of muscle injuries early in his career as he was still growing.
Giggs had hamstring and back issues a lot in the early days. As long as it's managed correctly (and sounds like it is) then he should be fine

Just think of Huggins when young players have stress fractures of the back. He took months to recover and kept picking up other problems.
Compensating for the injury during recovery often leads to other knock on issues. He's a young lad but needs to get it properly sorted or it could haunt him

I'm not gonna gang up on Speakman or KLD at all. As far as I can see they've done nothing wrong, quite the opposite. And if we fail to go up and people start bashing them it will all be based on hindsight.

It was just a poor joke unfortunately. I'd obviously love to go up this season but I think we'd invest wisely with the money we'll inevitably receive from sales in the summer.

We've actually done well to shift deadwood in the squad and added at least 1 guy to the starting XI which is more than usually happens in January.

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of Jayden Danns on loan until the end of the 2024-25 season.

The 19-year-old striker, who has featured for Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders on four occasions this campaign, completed all the relevant paperwork before 11pm deadline day.

An academy product of parent Club Liverpool Football Club, Danns will now complete a period of rehabilitation to return from a back injury that was identified during the medical process.

The first stages of his recovery will take place at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre and we look forward to welcoming Jayden back to Wearside in due course.

Kristjaan Speakman commented: “Jayden is an extremely talented player, who fits the profile we were searching for. His availability was always going to be determined late in the window due to Liverpool’s schedule and the demand for him was high, so we worked extremely hard to secure the player. It’s unfortunate that the medical process highlighted an issue that ultimately requires Jayden to take a period of rest. Despite this, he remained highly motivated to come to Sunderland and as such we agreed to collaborate with Liverpool to ensure there is an opportunity for him to join us at a later date. We remain excited by the prospect of working with him and look forward to supporting him throughout the upcoming period.”

Danns added: “This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and I’m grateful to the Club for placing their faith in me. I’ve done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step. I’m disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway, but I’m proud to have joined the Club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part.”

The striker played in last season’s EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium, as Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the capital, before scoring twice in an Emirates FA Cup victory over Southampton four days later.

In the latest show of faith from his parent Club, Danns signed a new long-term contract at Anfield on Monday.

The striker joined Liverpool aged eight and last scored for the Reds one month ago, as Slot’s side secured a 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley.

All at SAFC look forward to supporting Jayden’s rehabilitation and we look forward to his return to the North East.
I wonder if the new longterm deal on Monday has messed with his head, and he doesn’t really want to be here. Will be interesting to see how this pans out. As others have said we may only need him for cover in the final half dozen games, so nothing to get hung up about.

Danns is highly rated by Liverpool fans judging by comments on Sunderland Twitter, let’s hope the issue with his back is sorted ASAP

Obviously couldn't say much, but stress fracture is what I heard.

To me, for us to sign him still means we obviously didn't have time to get a replacement, but also something has happened in regards to maybe our commitment to the loan. I doubt we are paying as much as we were and I bet there's a clause protecting us too should we not get our money's worth.

Aside from that, even if he can make a strong impact in the last 10 games of the season, it'll do us a world of good, at the minute Isidor is doing very well and Mayenda has become his deputy even more so lately.

danns will be out for 3-5 weeks according to the athletic - they used 'several' as their term for it
