If Watson goes, we need to try and get Clarke in on loan like. We'd be short on the wing.

If Brighton are knocking back £90m bids for Mitoma, they can start the bidding for Watson at £25m, with a hefty sell-on clause. **** them

English tax has to be factored in

I always remember that Lewis potter transfer for Brentford, few moons ago now but the way money is these days I’d want 20m plus comfortably

English, his age and potential

we were kinda screwed by the rules that you can only give a 17 year old a 3 year deal. We’ll be in the same position with Rigg in a year, unless we can get him to renew

it’s crazy you can only give people pro deals at 17 as well

Just another loop hole to keep the talent at the top

Doubt we'd get both as we seem to be looking at loans with an obligation in the summer. That would mean we'd have to leave one of our 6 loan players out of a match day squad. So unless one of these is a permanent signing or we manage to do a deal to sign one of the players already on loan early we won't get both.
Maybe a loan we have may become a perm signing

This is where it gets difficult IMO. Finding players that are within our budget, able to contribute immediately while representing value for the longer term is really tough to achieve. I know the whole loan to buy on promotion wheeze is popular with fans after ELF, but even that doesn't really match with the brief (as if a club is willing to loan out without guarantee of sale, they're more likely to be out of the first team picture and therefore less ready to contribute for us from day one).

Ultimately, it becomes a balance once again. One or two to help us over the next 20 games, but not too many to destabilise what we've built, whilst being mindful that players to push us through the rest of the season are likely to be either affordable and not suitable for the next level or ready for the PL and out of our price range. Then there's the spectre of a scenario where we miss out and have to pick through the ramifications of what we've done in January in the summer and beyond. It's miles away from being the simple task that many think it to be.
ELF is loan to buy. He was ready to slot straight in.

The important factor here is whether Watson is willing to sign a new deal.

If he's willing, then we're in a strong position to say no to Brighton.

If he isn't willing, then selling him for, say, £5m now, rather than £5m in the summer when he has just 12 months left, makes a lot of sense to me. It means we can invest that £5m in the next few days towards a player like Edwards, who improves us and the balance of our squad instantly.

I’m hoping we can hold onto Watson until at least the summer, but if we decide to sell lump that money on Clarkes wages until the end of the season
