Harold Needler got a lot of tax benefits when he gave that money to City in the mid sixties. The Labour government had brought in sky high taxes and Needler was due a massive tax bill and he wrote it off. Then got a lot back when his company did a lot of the work redeveloping BP. There was once a good article about it on another City site where it reproduced an article about it from a financial paper which it said it at the time was the best tax dodge ever.
