THEY need more than just a new goalkeeper to dig themselves out of the hole they're now in, but apparently Arsenal will begin rebuilding their squad by snapping up Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet.

The Sun says that the Gunners are "keeping tabs" on the 24-year-old shot-stopper who was in superb form for the Black Cats when the two sides met earlier this month.

With Arsenal's season now in ruins following defeats to Blackburn and Bayern Munich in the space of four days, the club is poised to undergo a mass clear-out in the summer, with Wojciech Szczesny one of those under threat.

The Polish keeper has made a series of blunders this season and the Sun says that Mignolet is being lined up as his replacement. The Belgian keeper joined Sunderland three years ago for just £2m from Sint-Truiden and it's believed the northeast club will demand at least five times that amount.

I read that Joe Hart thinks he's been the standout keeper of the season so far.
Would love to see him stay, but will he be sacrificed for the next stage of rebuilding in the summer transfer window??
 
Be very difficult to keep hold of him - I wasn't sure last season - he looked good but still had a few niggling things about commanding his box. Now he looks a compolkete goalkeeper - money has to be good for him though (£15m minimum IMO) as I can't think of anyone better than him this season

You better not keep him you *********s!!!!!!!!!!! :mad:<grr> I rate him as the best keeper in the world, and I'd love to see him on the world's stage, as lovely as it is to see such a great grace a North east club!

Iker Casillas is horribly overrated, same with most keepers with a Spanish passport. They are continental types with the parrying into danger areas and the crappiest punching known to mankind. It physically aggravates me that people who have never played in the position, or even watch football from another country on a regular basis, just blindly follow conventional wisdom that Casillas is some-kind of sexy immortal goddess. As with many keepers who rise to the top, him and his ilk are good, most often as a "shot-stopper", but if I was buying a goalkeeper I'd want someone who can make a save and hold it when necessary, punching or palming it out on the rarest of occasions.

To me Mignolet is almost perfect. If you meshed him with Tim Krul, by far and away the best cross and corner catcher in the premier league (perhaps ever... shame he's shocking at kicking and throwing, and his positioning is suspect), it would be the greatest footballing entity on earth. Unfortunately, Mig still punches a bit too often when the catch is on, and can remain frozen on his goal-line when he should come out at set-plays and crosses. That still requires work, but he's an incredibly intelligent guy (believe he has a degree... Yeah, GET ******** Michael "I've got a few GCSE's" Owen... You're a numpty!) and is making considerable improvement year on year.

So, sell him. SELL HIM NOW!!! But not to Arsenal. Any top club who isn't Arsenal will do to be honest, just not them. They horribly waste a player's natural talents, particularly goalkeepers. In addition, I think it would melt a Gooner's brain to have Mig in goal, considering the duffers they have had recently. The vast majority of them were trying to tell themselves Szczesny was world class for goodness sake!!! I bet they still do on their board! The only things I'll ever crow about knowing well in advance of time is that I have been saying Szczesny is an utter lemon with nothing between his ears for a long time, and that I've rated Mig for a long time too <ok>.
 
Think its a couple of years but he isnt on the best of money, so should get him tied down to a good contract and his value will rise with it.
 
The club should be pulling out all the stops to sign him to a long term contract, thereby strengthening our negotiating position when the inevitable bids come in.
 
If a big club comes in he will go. As long as it's for big money it will be with my blessing. But are Arsenal that club? Can they get back with Man U and Chelsea ans Man. C. I don't think so.
Got to agree with Gandalf. A lot of top club keepers are in fact pretty poor. The thing is they get well protected by outstanding defenders and therefore have but a few things to do during a game. De geay, 18m and not that good, Kosielsy, average (apart from against us)' Cech, class but getting on a bit, the big two in spain, average. Even Bayern keeper last night made a couple of howlers and a couple of rubbish parry's/punches.
The lad at Stoke', Begovice, Krul and Mig, The. Three outstanding keepers for me. Sure Begovic was on the verge of joining a club in January. Think it was Chelsea. Could be wrong.

Like it or not this lad is destined to play Champs League football and we wont be offering him that in the next 10 years of his carrer. We may not even offer him ANYTHING in the next 10 years and he is ambitious.

Will he be sought after in the summer? Absolutely guaranteed.

Will we sell him? If the price is above £15m (I'd say we should ask £20m) then he will be sold imo.

De Gea has been absolutely outstanding for most of this season, making some vital saves along the way. Still only 22 as well, will only get better. By far and away the best distribution of any goalkeeper in this league.

Petr Cech is 30 years old, he's not even in his prime yet for a goalkeeper. Isn't as amazing as he first appeared but then he doesn't have a world class defence in front of him any more.

Mignolet has been a good 'keeper this year. He's shown a lot of promise but he's still got a lot to learn. He's been as good as Joe Hart was last season, and nobody would throw £20m at Joe Hart realistically after this season, progression and consistency the key with this one, I'd leave him where he is for another couple of seasons at least if I fancied buying him.

I'm sorry, but only Man Utd fans and Fergie spout this absolute cack about De Gea being anything other than a decent keeper. He isn't, not yet anyway. He doesn't have the right mentality at the moment to be a goalkeeper for a top club, for a start. If Man Utd are walloping a team from the first minute, if that team run down the other end once and have a chance, he usually boobs it.

This "world-class shot-stopping" lie really has to stop as well, it's nonsense. What's the point saving a shot if you're just going to spoon it into the path and present an easier chance than the one the original guy hit you from? The majority of keepers getting first team football in this league push the ball round the post and are capable of catching the ball. Continental types like Pepe Reina and De Gea come with the flashy name and Spanish passport, but they flap and palm everything because that's how they're taught, and it's pretty pathetic. In Britain, such keeper-talent coached in this manner is rarer, thank goodness. Think Rob Green and Paul Robinson. They aren't any better at saving shots than any other keeper, they just make it all look that little more theatrical...
A lot of the time the ball is shot straight at the guy and he pushes it away ridiculously, and then is heralded for it? Pull the other one. In this league, we catch those <ok>

I'll give De Gea his due, he's relatively young, and he has pulled some good saves out of the bag because he has decent reflexes, but these are met with such an intense over-reaction because everything he's done previously has been terrible, or Fergie will go in a huff and have you whacked if you don't orgasm on command. His distribution is pretty good, especially kicking-wise, and he's comfortable with ball at feet, but he's still an absolute passenger/mistake waiting to happen, however you dress him up. He needs to put on some muscle, man-up and learn quickly, otherwise he's going to be heading down the route of the other rubbish goalies Fergie has invested in.

Command of the area is the worst in the league by miles, decision making is comfortably the poorest, and the confidence he gives the back four is absolute zip. His erratic nature may be tamed in time, it's often just more practical to get another one. See Spurs with Gomes... They probably told themselves he was a "world class shot-stopper" until he left, too. If you're going to say he's been outstanding this year, you're either insulting Van Der Sar and Schmeichel, or you've got a new word for them and a new scale for goalies <ok>

Edit: To be honest I think it's an insult to even talk about De Gea on a Mignolet thread, they're world's apart!

he will stay if he gets offered a better contract, well i say he will if nothing is improved money wise of course he will depart. show parity with the top paid and see what happens.
there is only two answers after all.

I think you have every chance of hanging onto the lad. Whenever I've heard interviews he seems level headed and it's clear he really likes the region (who wouldn't... apart from Jenas)
 
I reckon we have a decent chance actually. Of the "top" teams, only arsenal really need him. And can they afford him? I wouldn't have though so. Even if they can, it's looking pretty unlikely they will qualify for the CL again this season. Mig comes across as a pretty level-headed guy and whilst I wouldn't blame him for leaving for the chance of CL football, I reckon he might just stick with us if the choice is a Europa league side.... for one more year at least.
