I actually think a tiny tory majority is the worst possible outcome. Cameron is a much weaker leader than Major was and he couldn't control his lunatic fringe. Now they are more on the far right, the majority is likely to be even smaller than Major 's and we have a leader who has a history of bowing to the demands of the far right of his party. At least if he had a bigger majority he could have ignored the mentalists
Morning chaps, stayed up all night watching everything unfold and what an incredible night it was. My faith in the British (well English), electorate has been restored, common sense has prevailed. Hopefully DC will end up with a majority albeit a small one and the Tories can get on with the job of repairing this great nation of ours without the hindrance of Clegg and co. With Labour being completely wiped out in Scotland it's going to be a long way back for them, without the Scottish vote they could well become virtually unelectable and that is not good for British politics. I say that as a Conservative voter too because a strong opposition is needed for healthy government
Obviously disappointed but the Tory no/slim majority and SNP clean sweep raises an interesting scenario. Wait until the Scots start kicking off. I can see Sturgeon saying she has a mandate in Scotland, and it's difficult to argue against that. I can see fifty thousand Scots picketing Faslane and Dave has to deal with that one!
One other thing and this is where IMO our electoral system needs reform. The SNP got 1.5M votes and now have 56 MPs, UKiP got 3.0M votes and just 2 MPs. Now whether you agree with their policies or not, that is simply not right and is where the 1st past the post system makes a mockery of democracy. The thought that just 1.5M people could have held the rest of the nation to ransom beggars belief.
"without the instance of Clegg and co" *Google translate* "without the one thing stopping us from gravitating back towards feudalism" Social mobility is stagnating. If you are born poor now you are more likely to remain poor for the rest of your life than anyone since about 1900. It makes me feel a little sick. OTBC - brighten up my weekend
I echo this sentiment I wonder how long it will be befor there are riots- the so called regeneration of areas of london will lead to massive problems and the tories will enable the gentrification and dismantling of poorer communities to gather pace
Yes,that's a pretty likely outcome sadly. I think riots are most likely to happen in Scotland though. Anyway MrsCT retires in July and I am off to the estate agent this morning. It's something we had half planned whatever the outcome. So I will be watching my football in France maybe next season.
Well looks like conservatives will actually be first past the post in what has been one of the poorest campaigns ever based on little more then fear, negative tactics and sniping with a pretty weak group of leaders. My first reaction was disappointment as I think the Tories will do a pretty horrible job, but then Im not sure if any of the others are much better. Another government in it for themselves only interested in short term success, could see us in more trouble over the long run. Hopefully we will see a change in the voting system as the current one is pretty prehistoric.
The same vote share as the SNP and LDs combined, it's a mockery, isn't it. Although the fact that 1 in 5 of my neighbours voted for them is a little worrying. I shall be hunting them down during the day and giving them a good talking to.
Looks like the British public have given into fear and voters appear to have put their own self interest over the welfare of the more vulnerable in our society. How parties like the Greens & UKIP can get so many votes and so few MP's whilst a party like the Conservatives, Labour & the SNP can get so many MP's with so few votes just goes to show that democracy is dead in this country.
Crikey. Even Tory MPs are saying Ed Balls will be "a big loss to The Commons". Some even conceding he was the "top economist in The House".
Yep. but unfortunately he ****ed up with his presentation/marketing of himself. People don't seem to look beyond the facade, which is huge shame.
