I have no recollection of that meeting at all, although I do remember some of the horses

Commentary from Bob Haines ..."and they jump the first...and they`re not all over because MEON VALLEY is down, BASSNET is down and POPHAM DOWN......has fallen". Priceless. Any ideas of the race

That's about as far as I got, having seen the visible card. Apart from that I have no idea.

As Popham Down was one of the riderless horses that caused the 23rd fence pile up I'd say the '67 National.

Different Class didn't even finish 3rd. He fell :)

And Stalbridge Colonist won at 2-1 - handy price!

I knew you had found a Newspaper. Next guess, what newspaper? Was it the News Chronicle?

hahaha - no Ron, and did you mean the Sporting Chronicle? Finest racing paper ever, sunk by the evil cockney mafia at Sporting Life!

No, I meant the News Chronical but I can't remember when that paper stopped. I always used to look for the Ogbourne stable tips (Gordon Richards) as they usually won when tipped up.

Oh right, I never heard of that one.

Being close to Manchester as a young man, the Sporting Chronicle was a must have. They also produced a weekly edition every Thursday, with a centre pull-out with all the previous week's results - complete races not just the first 3 or 4. I used to keep these supplements as a reference like ao ongoing paper form book (all well before the internet of course!) They also produced an annual form guide, which with hindsight I can see was very similar to the Timeform one, although I never saw one of those at the time. These were all printed and published from Ancoats, Manchester (Withy Grove?) so very northern and local, and all the betting shops had SC on their walls :)

Yes I remember those form sections. I used to go through them with a mate of mine. Each piece of form had a reference to the horse's previous race and, as you say, you could just plough back through the form in the earlier issues. Bit quicker these days

I thought this may be of interest, but as it's from 1957 I won't pose it as a "Who Is It" as I doubt anyone would know! The caption below the piccy says it all :)
