I might be slightly biased here chaps, but I think you'll be very impressed with Monsieur Loussier You could always 'youtube' them (that sounds like a really bad "Carry On" line), to see what you might be getting later
He was actually a very accomplshed pianist Dave. It's easy to play wrong notes, I know, but to the extent that he did was fantastic. Must admit though, I could listen to the Loussier trio all day quite easily.
I agree about Les, but there is someone I love seeing and listening to, though not live because they no longer are, is Victor Borge! Because of his incredible humour, nobody took his playing seriously!
Totally agree there Dave. This is a classic in my eyes. This is really what you call timing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyArTMtgT1w

Just watched the reprise of the Dankworths that was shown just after his demise. Saw them in the mid-70's in NZ and it was like all Xmases had come at once and a couple of weeks later, Blood Sweat and Tears with the magnificent David Clayton Thomas. And they opened up with their arrangement ofSpain! Its not often you get to see two of the most accomplished vocalists in the business like that. I'm Sky+ the piano greats so we can watch it at a more sensible time. While I typed this I listened to an instrumental version of You Only Live Twice by the great John Barry. What a fantastic arranger that guy was.
Whatever he composed, he could also arrange for any genre, whether it be orchestral, big band etc. That's not easy at all. I've heard a lot of composers who have written for a certain ensemble and been unable to arrange it for any other group. Only 2 hours to go now. I'm really looking forward to it. Will be interested to hear all your views on it when you have watched it.
I love this thread! I never listen to jazz but loving the links maestro! There is so much great music around and I love having my eyes opened to music I wouldn't normally hear! I was listening to Sufjan Stevens before following some of the links on this thread...
Glad some of you are finding the links to your liking chaps. I won't post any of my other types of music though. I fear you may not think too highly of them. And no, I'm not talking bloody bagpipes!
I'll run the risk of everybody's wrath here but back in the days of variety shows on tv, there was a trio of foreigners that played harmonicas, the one in the middle had a huge bass cord chromatic! I can't remember what they were called, and I've tried to google any tenuous link that I can think of, but I can't find them! Any ideas anyone?
It wouldn't be this trio of likely lads, would it Dave? Haven't watched the BBC prog yet, Maestro. Might give it a burn now on the old I-Player.
Not bad Gandy. Not quite in the same league as the old paper and comb though Will be interested in hearing your views on the Jazz programme.
That's them cheers Gandy, you're a star! I just love to hear any instrument played skillfully! I remember seeing the late Dermot O'Brien playing an alpine waltz on the accordian, and he had the accordian yodelling, I tell you, it was spectacular!
