I like the bit when the two broads get on the Vespa's. That video reminds me of some dodgy estate pub during Karaoke night everyone dressed to the nines in their TK Maxxs Sunday best, all whats missing is the silence when someone walks in and the obligatory tear up. According to one of my Manc mates a part of that video got cut because some guy was doing an aeroplane gesture, a bit below the belt if that's true.
I've just watched it Maestro. Basie's spot was probably the best, Peterson the most accomplished and Loussier the most compelling. But for me, Return to Forever with Chick Corea were the most special. The great Stanley Clarke could make the bass special and is up there with Pastorius as one of the greatest. It was a shame they didn't play more Loussier, they seemed to cut it off but I guess they haven't that many recordings. I remember Jazz Club from Ronnie Scotts being shown on Beeb2 I'm sure but can't find any trace of it. Trouble is I start going off in tangents. I'm now going to play Cape Wrath a tremendous album by the Morrisey Mullen band. I have the studio recording but the live one from Ronnie Scotts is outstanding if you can get it. It has a great version of Lovely Day by Bill Withers. A friend of mine bumped into Dick Morrisey and he hadn't even got a copy himself only 400 were pressed.
The size of Peterson's hand, he should never be able to play like that - not that I'm in the slightest bit jealous I also agree, that it seemed they cut a bit of Loussier. If you're on facebook redruth, there's a maynard ferguson page on there. Worth looking at some of their links of his performances The link I posted today is from there. I must admit though, that the 'older' style of Jazz is more my cup of tea than the the new wave style. I wished I'd have recorded that programme now, and I would have willingly watched it again and again. One track i did listen today was Maynard Ferguson's version of Hey Jude, off his album MF2. Cracking piano improvisation in that
One lady I'm impressed with is Madeleine Peyroux. Very acoustic and very atmospheric. Her version of Summer Wind is so laid back its just like a lazy river.
Here we go. A different take on 'Hey Jude'. Loving the bari sax giving it some 'oooomph' <---technical music term there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvGswDvIvtc Enjoy. Redruth - if you get chance, check his version of Westside Story.
Apologies for 'cluttering' up this thread, but I've just got to post these links. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXqFrq_QsLo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMn245qb2s8 Hope some of you enjoy
Apparently he had arthritus all throughout his life, hardly surprising when you consider how many times he must have ran those fingers up and down the ivories at terrific speed! One of my favourites - Cakewalk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZbSonHGVXc
I never knew that Cautious. Makes the man even more impressive. Love Cakewalk. Here's one from my 'library' for you... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tY_RE7tWzM&feature=related
Was just listening to that Maestro! It was a delight to listen to it again though One of my favourite albums is 'How High The Moon' by Oscar, and this is towards the end of it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUPoK2Aelyc
A friend of mine has got a music shop in Alby (they also sell jetskis, some of you may know it) On the piano side of things, he had the sole uk dealership for Baldwin pianos. A few years ago I was asked if I wanted to go to an exhibition with him. When we got there and set the stand up, he was asked if anyone would be demonstrating the Baldwin pianos. My friend said he thought that someone might be along later but couldn't be sure. Only one person turned up to play the Baldwin after lunch..... George Shearing!! Guess which stand had the biggest crowd after that.
Genius Gandy! E is a modernday legend! Have u heard the villagers album "Becoming a jackal"?
Just seen the 'Jazz Piano Gold' on the iPlayer. Some really terrific performances on there, and shows why we need BBC4! Count Basie was simply superb, and I really enjoyed Ahmad Jamal and especially Abdullah Ibrahim! I'm not familiar with these two at all, but I'm going to go have a search
Glad you enjoyed it Cautious Somewhere on youtube, there must be a jazz masterclass by the trumpeter Wynton Marsellis. I watched the video of it once. Well worth a look if you can trace it.
Good album that, Rubik. Nominated for a Mercury wasn't it? I have a lot of Irish rellies, and some of them rave about them over there. Finally heard the Jazz Gold sessions. What an enjoyable listen that was. Really liked Loussier, didn't know about him, Peterson I was familiar with from his many appearances on TV. I find it harder to get into the more brassy stuff just yet - it may come! I can appreciate people like Maynard Ferguson, and the way he controls those high notes. I need to see more, the links here have been a great help. My tastes are mainly guitar driven classic rock and indie. First time I ever walked into a club (it was the Industrial Club in Oak Street, anyone remember it? Later became Talk of East Anglia), Purple Haze was playing. I was hooked ever since. Got into classical and opera around twenty odd years ago, and am quite knowledgeable now. Dont like Country, never going to get into Hip-Hop and similar (you know what I'm saying, mofo?) Jazz is the one genre left to explore, so keep 'em coming, it's been a pleasure hearing people's views.
I'm quite fond of blues! I mean proper blues like Sonny Terry, Brownie Mcgee (sp) and Big Bill Broonzy! Great music for 'chillin' | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm1qtX7Mz5w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgWhxB5EkmQ
If you think you've heard the harmonica played - think on! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGUGXOxs6p0&feature=related
Great stuff Dave. Damn those old guys could play. Back in the sixties, I was listening to 'white' blues, which is crap by comparison, but we liked it. Something like this from Chicken Shack, which had Christine Perfect on vocals, later Christine McVie when Fleetwood Mac turned from a great British rock band into a **** American MOR band. **** you Mick Fleetwood, glad you bolluxed up the Brits!
