I run at the gym. My buggered up knees won't take the pounding from running on pavement.

I go rowing on a Sunday morning at my local rowing club, love it.

I also enjoy cycling and shooting.

I was just about ready to watch my beloved Liverpool play a euro game, then I realised they are not playing in Europe this season.

Looks like I will have to support another team

I'm no expert but what I would say is just be realistic when you start out. At first it will hurt, you'll be running slowly and not very far and you'll wonder why the **** you're putting yourself through so much for what seems like so little return. It's baby steps to begin with as your body gets used to something alien. After a couple of weeks you'll suddenly feel like adding distance and cutting time is much easier and so pushing yourself that extra couple of k or taking a minute off your best time is less daunting and more rewarding. I'd also say you should have at least one, preferably two runs a week that push you right to the edge. I tend to do one shorter one that is a speed run and then a longer one that is a stamina run. The shorter one should take you to the point of puking and the longer one should leave you on your knees with exhaustion. The other two to three runs can be comfortable training runs.

Final bit of advice. ALWAYS reward yourself after a run if you've achieved your goal. Bollocks to eating a salad and drinking water the evening after a run, you're not training for the Olympics. Drink beer, have a curry or whatever else floats your boat.

    Enjoy!

I should clarify that I've done a quite a bit treadmill running but find it boring as ****, then when I've tried outdoors I can't find the right pace and gallop along too quickly and **** myself up.
I want to be able to do exactly as you describe really so that I reach a point where I want to run and enjoy putting some miles in.
Up to now I've never reached that conclusion after previous attempts.

I tend to treadmill run as I like to set and monitor targets and times. Difficult to do that on the road. I also have a gammy knee that doesn't appreciate road running.

When I do run outdoors I tend to just go for a run at a leisurely pace and keep going until I'm tired or bored. Alternatively I map out a course and put together a playlist that is a tad longer than my ultimate target time. After a few runs I start to relate parts of songs with places on the run which helps monitor whether I need to speed up or slow down (or keep going if I'm ahead of schedule but feeling ok). It's pretty crap when you realise that the music is going to stop before the end of the route!

Bollocks to looking at a watch all the time, that's what freaks you out and gets you blowing up too quickly.

I'm going to try running again but not sure my knee will cope with it, as its ****ed.

What would you sporty types recommend in terms of footwear that might provide me with enough cushion to get me through?

A treadmill. If you've got ****ed knees stay off the road. I bought a treadmill and stuck it in the garage. No excuses for not using it 5 times a week (plenty of excuses not to make it to the gym). Will pay for itself compared to gym membership in a year, arguably quicker considering how the convenience of it means it's used more than a gym treadmill would be. I'll PM you a link (although the company I bought from have gone bust).

    Hoka meant to be good.

Or is that for dodgy feet maybe? They were recommended to me for one of those ailments.
