Sky you'll be pleased to hear that I've been for my run, hit my target and will be on the beer after my 5pm conference call.
I was just about ready to watch my beloved Liverpool play a euro game, then I realised they are not playing in Europe this season.
Looks like I will have to support another team

... buy some trainers ... might also ask the staff in the store to write L and R on them with black marker pen to save any future embarrassment![]()

I'm no expert but what I would say is just be realistic when you start out. At first it will hurt, you'll be running slowly and not very far and you'll wonder why the **** you're putting yourself through so much for what seems like so little return. It's baby steps to begin with as your body gets used to something alien. After a couple of weeks you'll suddenly feel like adding distance and cutting time is much easier and so pushing yourself that extra couple of k or taking a minute off your best time is less daunting and more rewarding. I'd also say you should have at least one, preferably two runs a week that push you right to the edge. I tend to do one shorter one that is a speed run and then a longer one that is a stamina run. The shorter one should take you to the point of puking and the longer one should leave you on your knees with exhaustion. The other two to three runs can be comfortable training runs. When I start back in Devon on Monday and have many an evening hour to while away I want (not really the correct word but I'll stick with it) to start running.
Any training tips? Or, more important, motivation tips?
I tend to treadmill run as I like to set and monitor targets and times. Difficult to do that on the road. I also have a gammy knee that doesn't appreciate road running.I should clarify that I've done a quite a bit treadmill running but find it boring as ****, then when I've tried outdoors I can't find the right pace and gallop along too quickly and **** myself up.
I want to be able to do exactly as you describe really so that I reach a point where I want to run and enjoy putting some miles in.
Up to now I've never reached that conclusion after previous attempts.
I'm going to try running again but not sure my knee will cope with it, as its ****ed.
What would you sporty types recommend in terms of footwear that might provide me with enough cushion to get me through?

A treadmill. If you've got ****ed knees stay off the road. I bought a treadmill and stuck it in the garage. No excuses for not using it 5 times a week (plenty of excuses not to make it to the gym). Will pay for itself compared to gym membership in a year, arguably quicker considering how the convenience of it means it's used more than a gym treadmill would be. I'll PM you a link (although the company I bought from have gone bust).I'm going to try running again but not sure my knee will cope with it, as its ****ed.
