Where is the evidence of this? A complete load of claptrap! Why do surgeons wear masks in an operating theatre?
If you keep your germs to yourself you LIMIT the spread of the virus. It is spreading again because a lot of folk are just plain stupid and selfish, in not wearing a mask in social gatherings, shops etc.

There’s been studies that show that folk naturally ignore the ‘distancing’ sign when wearing a mask and that one can override the other, I can’t remember where I read it but maybe that what he was alluding to.

I have to say like I bought these Adidas masks and there is absolutely zero chance of anything passing through them when they being worn, in or out, so I’d categorically believe they did their job.
