That story's been doing the rounds for a couple of days now.
Nice to see that the BBC are on the ball!

  2. The BEEB 'lost it' some time ago, mate - they really are a 2nd string media organisation now. They don't process news quickly and don't even have the Integrity label to hide behind anymore.

If he is entitled that would mean its written in his contract so if Ajax refuse to allow the transfer to go ahead then surely they are going to lose out because in a year he will be a free agent and out of contract.

I can understand Ajax wanting to get the most money from this deal yet this doesn't make much sense.

Have to disagree there mate as when a transfer story appears on the BBC (apart from their gossip section which is just snippets from other 3rd party sites), or you get "sources said" 99% of the time they are correct.

If you look at the other media sites, they speculate, invent headlines and stories to get people to visit their site.

I would say if the BBC report a story or say "they understand" then its going to be true.

  5. Fair enough - 'opinions is opinions'!! I guess my expectations of the Beeb's News impartiality have been so let down in recent years (see the OS issue and their complicity with Brady and Co) that I tend to see only the worst of them.

In this case, it was not an opinion. This story involved an interview with the player himself, and was an extract from the interview in a prominent Belgian newspaper. The Beeb have just been far slower than everybody else to pick up on it.

The BBC don't operate in the same way as onlite sites of other news outlets as they aren't a sensationalist transfer gossip site and the only reason its been "Picked up" now is because the guy doing the live feed is adding in news, thats why they may seem "slow" as other sites need to fill their pages with 20-30 or even more transfer gossip to keep viewers happy.

Anyhow, at least we know were the "ITK" has been getting his info regarding Vertonghen, maybe he has been enjoying Belgium chocs while browsing Belgium sites.

He must be a clever boy if he can understand Flemish. I still think the Beeb should have picked up on other fact that it wasn't gossip, but fact, earlier than they did.

Has no one else seen this. Up to date quotes by De Boer. The Vertonghen quotes were really him just posturing. I'd say De Boer is the man to listen to in all this...

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-deal-nearly-complete-says-Frank-De-Boer.html

Tottenham should not give up hope of signing Jan Vertonghen, despite the current contract dispute with the Holland club with is threatening to scupper the deal, says Ajax boss Frank de Boer.

De Boer believes the deal remains very close, despite Vertonghen's recent admission that he may have to stay with the Eredivisie outfor for another year.

Vertonghen is entitled to 15 per cent of the agreed £9.5million transfer deal under the terms of his deal with the Dutch champions.

Ajax have indicated their reluctance to honour the clause and, while the 25-year-old still seeks a move to White Hart Lane, but the manager believes the deal can happen.

'We’re very close,' De Boer said. 'But if the deal is not done, Jan must start his training next week with us.

'I was in the same situation (when he left Ajax for Barcelona in 1999). But, eventually, I expect the deal will be done. I expect everything will be alright.'

Hang on, lads, I've got an idea...

As we know, a lot of goalkeepers that come from the Eredivisie are weak when it comes to dealing with corners (i.e. Gomes, Westerveld)
As we also know, a lot of Dutch wingers prefer to cut inside rather than cross (i.e. Overmars, Robben, Van Persie)

So here's the plan. We offer Ajax £9m for Vertonghen, plus throw in a secret weapon that will create havoc in the minds of goalkeepers across the Eredivisie. I am referring, of course, to David Bentley.

They can't give him back when they discover we may have lied about his abilities, right?

yet another twist. So sick of this...

    http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...-joins-ajax-training-as-tottenham-move-stalls

Vertonghen joins Ajax training as Tottenham move stalls
Frank de Boer has confirmed that the highly-rated defender has returned to prepare for the new Eredivisie season as they have failed to agree a fee with the north London club

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen's move to Tottenham looks to have stalled after Frank de Boer confirmed that the defender has returned to pre-season training with the Dutch club.

The Belgian centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane but the two parties have so far failed to agree a fee.

"Last week we’ve talked with Jan [Vertonghen] and his manager and everyone is now up to date," De Boer told reporters.

"Because Ajax and Tottenham have not agreed yet, Jan starts with us today."

Vertonghen has become a sought-after commodity after establishing himself on the European stage by making 155 league appearances for Ajax, netting 23 goals.

Andre Villas-Boas looks poised to be named as Spurs' new manager imminently and Goal.com has revealed that the former Chelsea boss looks set to have £70 million to spend, with Vertonghen one of his main targets.

Actually, i've just noticed that the above quote suggests that he problem is between Ajax and Tottenham and not Ajax and Vertonghen. You can't discredit De Boer's comments. He'll know what's going on. IS DL still playing hardball? If we lose out on this deal it will be the final straw for me in terms of having faith in Levy. He ****ed up sacking Harry and it looks like he's not gonna soften the blow with a bargain like Jan.

    just be patient EFB.

the problem was between ajax and vert over 15% of the T.fee.

if that's caused problems it's not levy's fault. if Ajax are now coming back to levy and saying they want more, it's a whole new spanner in the works that isn't Levy's fault.

also gotta remember that the media sources were expecting some News today. whether it's AVB, Sig, Vert, the investment... any one of them. But it looks like it'll be tomorrow or weds before anything is said. Probably weds I think.

Therefore they have to twist the truth, just to get some sort of news out there. this goal.com is a typical article from them. just laugh it off.

It might be goal.com but those are the latest comments by De Boer, there's no getting around that. It sounds to me like Ajax want more to offset the loss of the 15% but even so the price is still very cheap considering he's practically the best player in Holland (so the experts say). You can't look a gift horse in the mouth. All i'm saying is that i'd be bloody pizzed off if the deal collapses because Levy wouldn't budge even slightly. If he's worth this much with a year left, what's his normal value? I can see Arsenal nipping in and grabbing him at the last minute. If they show intent, that will be enough to convince Jan that he should go there. Loyalty only stretches so far.

Vertonghen has said what the problem is himself.
Ajax don't want to stump up the 15% sell-on clause that's in his contract, due to his reduced fee.
He was very pissed off that they'd leaked the information, too.

I assume that they've attempted to get us to pay it or the player to wave it and both have told them to do one.

Well obviously they're asking us for the money and whilst i think principally we shouldn't it will only work out to be around £1million (if that) as they're not asking for 15% but the difference between what Jan wants and what Ajax think they owe. It's probably between 5% and 10%. Now for a deal that looks like being no more than £9.6million, that's hardly breaking the bank. Especially when you're the sort of chairman that is more than happy to blow £8million on a player like Bassong.

Can't we just throw in Khumalo and call it £10m?
