Now their financial director's playing silly buggers to the press, trying to insinuate that it's down to us. <doh>

I don't see how they have a leg to stand on. If he is entitled to a set percentage?

Or are they forcing him to accept a waver as part of the relinquishing of his contract?

Assuming he ends up here and what I read today is true, Vertonghen's rapidly become nearly my favorite player. Anyone can jump on a bandwagon. He seems to really want to join Spurs despite recent adversity.

Does anyone know if Vertonghen has a buy-out clause in his contract? If so, can every Spurs fan donate £10 so we can buy it out and sort this deal out once and for all? I'm sure the gesture would be appreciated!

If there is a buy-out clause, we'd all know about it by now, surely. So I'm pretty sure there won't be. Just an asking price (15m euros it seems).

Lets be honest, we're hardly in a position to moan at ajax for being difficult with a transfer deal, as it sounds like Ajax want to get as much as they can from this deal and its business so they have every right, especially as they are losing their player of the year.

^^^ Ajax are losing a key member of there team, of course they're going to want to get the best deal possible. If this was the other way round and you were selling Bale/Modric, you would be just as stubbron.

I'm sure that everyone understands the need to negotiate the best deal with the buying club, but trying to get the player to drop clauses in his contract?
Seems a bit excessive and antagonistic, to me.
I wonder what his teammates make of it.

From what I understand of the situation, Vertonghen was on a lower wage than many of the other Ajax players. The quid pro quo being a 15% share of any transfer fee. Now, it seems that Ajax want to renege on that. Somewhat disingenuous of them, I feel.

I suppose it's possible Ajax have asked Spurs to pay Vertonghen's cut on top, and Levy has said no.

  11. Can anyone assist? I just read that we are interested in signing a 'Jan Vertonghen'. Could he be related to the guy that we were allegedly on the point of signing what seems some years ago? His son or nephew perhaps? I heard the original was a damn good player in his day....... <whistle>

I concur with my fellow Spurs fans here.

Ajax are making my balls itch on this one.

<grr> can people only add comments if and when he signs. Every day I see new comments on this thread - and think finally he has signed, only to see nothing of the sort. Stop it, people. This is tortuous enough without the constant false dawns!
