Party before country yet again. Does the country actually have a functioning government?

  3. Crazy stuff - Mr Gove was crystal clear on the Today programme this morning when he said it would go ahead.

We will wait to see what she has to say in the Commons this afternoon, but it looks like yet another attempt to keep this shambolic party in power just a little longer. It is starting to unravel, not surprising when you see just how badly it is stuck in the past. If a week is a long time in politics, just how much can things move in 2.5 years?

  5. It's utterly shambolic. The begging bowl going round to MPs in the form of promises in negotiations that cannot actually be delivered (and said promises being put into law <doh>), votes being stalled, the first £1 billion marriage in history unravelling before everyone's eyes, the pound falling to its lowest level this year etc. etc. Still - that Corbyn's not a very nice man is he? And hey - France.

Correct, Corbyn cannot be trusted and France is in state of shambles, good spot.

Given the widespread opposition to this remoaner inspired withdrawal bill the only sensible option was to delay the vote to give time to reassess. They will need to radically alter the backstop to garner any further support from MPs of all persuasion.

So, another hour in British politics:
10.45 - News leaks that May will pull vote at 11.30
11.00 - Westminster evacuated by fire alarm
11.07 - Delayed PM's media briefing begins. Journalists told ''Vote is going ahead as planned''.
    11.21 - Briefing ends.
    11.30 - Vote cancelled.

Subsequent confusion in as much as there is a possibility that the Government might not be able to postpone the vote, without Parliament voting for a postponement.
We'll just wait to see what May says to Parliament later.

I wonder what Harold Wilson would say? He certainly did not exaggerate.

So Mr Gove gets an afternoon off instead of having to defend the fisheries policy. Probably quite relieved.

  13. The fisheries policy is the best thing about the whole sorry mess...

You know just how bad it has become when you see comments on the Express site saying that this government is making the opposition look good.

Will the vote ever happen - Mrs May pretty much admitted she would be well beaten so will they try to go back and get another agreement or just give up?

A group of expats have failed in their bid to halt Brexit in a high Court by having the EU referendum result declared void. They argued that breaches of spending limits by pro-leave organisations meant the referendum was not a 'free and fair' vote. The judge blocked their claim because their case lacked merit and was too late.

One of the few advantages from all this mess is that SH. has not used the soundbite 'Strong and stable Government' for a long time now - even the phrase 'Natural party of government' hasn't come up for a while, because heaven help us if that is the case. The whole thing is a shambles ! Apparently there is a poll as to whether Downing Street should be renamed either 'Drowning Street' or 'Clowning Street' - I prefer the first. So, apparently, Parliament no longer has a say in the UK. Only a minority Government which is petrified by an even smaller group within its own ranks can decide. So much for taking back control, democracy is dying before our eyes.

What we have seen in the Commons is the chaos that this government has brought about simply to try and protect itself. For over two years business have had their investment on hold until they know where they are taking the country, and after today there is still no clarity. The trade figures show that the country continues to slip further behind with manufacturing showing no growth at all, and services slowing to minimal growth.
Having been rebuked for being in contempt once, it sounded as if Mr. Speaker was casting doubts on their honesty again. Of course as you watched you could see the non answers to direct questions. There is still no way forward and I see no possibility of enough change to placate the rabid Brexiteers.
