Again I'm not sure how a player can play over 330 times for the same team whilst "mostly being dreadful". I appreciate he isn't the most cultured of defenders and can look a bit lumbered, but I disagree on the whole he hasn't been dreadful in his time for us. He's had poor spells, and that has perhaps been highlighted with our position but he was excellent alongside Egan, excellent alongside Zakuani, very good alongside Ogilvie for half a season under Lovell and very good alongside Tucker in Evans' first season. Overall he's had more good seasons than bad and even this season, the defence hasn't really been the problem, more a crap midfield with an inability to create much attack for a poor strikeforce.Pegleg - I was critical of Wright for Swindon's 3rd goal - and, yes, he has other mistakes in him... BUT - - Ehmer has been ( mostly ) dreadful in his time with Gills ((( and Bristol Rovers .))) I know I'm not on my own with my assessment of Ehmer.... there have been times when I wished that we had only 10 men rather than use Ehmer............ and, I have to agree with you - that Wright will be dropped before Ehmer ---- and those are the sort of tactics that will prevent Gills from progressing properly.
You comment on competition for Ehmer is a factor as to why he's improved but before the transfer window opened we had 4 professionals on the books who were CBs, these were Wright, Baggott, Mnoga & Ehmer. Now we only have 3 on the books with Baggott & Mnoga gone elsewhere and Masterson joining us. So no I don't think competition was a factor because he has less now than previously. If you look at the stats for the season, Gills were actually top 10-12 for defence and have significantly more clean sheets than the teams around us in the league, it was only the fact we had the worst attack in the top 10 divisions of English football that we find ourselves down where we are. That isn't Ehmer's responsibility to score 15-20 goals up the other end.Pegleg,
I respect your comments.... I do note the criticism of Ehmer that is contained...
I stick by my 'overall' assessment of Max... and remind you that, as things stood ( before Galinson ), Ehmer was heading for a hat-trick of relegations !
I am happy with the improvement in mostly all the squad ( including Ehmer - and especially MacDonald. ).... Is this partly because there is competition for places - giving 'existing' players a wake-up call ? -- Were players like Ehmer too comfortable before the recent arrivals ?
I would love for Ehmer to raise his standards, (( a-la-MacDonald )), and keep his place on merit - but - may I remind you of the title, and subject, of my previous post (( being ruthless in the Summer. )) ....If Ehmer ( and others ) can continue to prove themselves, then - fair enough - and give them another year....As things were before Christmas, Ehmer ( and others - including midfield and so-called strikers ) , had been given sufficient opportunity - and failed.... Gills are in a different scenario regarding recruitment... We no longer have to tolerate mediocrity - we need to be ruthless with deadwood.
Relegated from L1 with Bristol Rovers.I'm not saying Ehmer is perfect, but I think he's proven time and again he can play League One football comfortably.
Tutonda also have 3 relagationsPegleg,

I agree. I don't like people slating Ehmer even when he has played well. This season think he has generally been good in most games. Over 300 games for Gills and countless managers and probably 250 + decent ones. We will not see an outfield player play that many games for us.You comment on competition for Ehmer is a factor as to why he's improved but before the transfer window opened we had 4 professionals on the books who were CBs, these were Wright, Baggott, Mnoga & Ehmer. His performances may have improved with the uplift in spirit around the club, I hasten guess that is likely. He has always been a confidence player and when his confidence is low, his performances do drop, but for this season, I don't see him as the weak link at the back. The naivety of people like Wright, Law, Mnoga & the unpredictability of Tutonda, along with a missing midfield have been the bigger concern. I'm not saying Ehmer is perfect, but I think he's proven time and again he can play League One football comfortably, and with someone of his experience and tenure at the club, that can only be an asset. I expect us to see a better Ehmer towards the end of the season on the basis the club, team and coaching staff are rejuvenated.
Ehmer and Alexander signed, both been excellent this month. Need Williams to sign next, real quality and McDonald.Ruthless in the Summer !
I believe that Galinson has done good 'business' in the January transfer window... The 'dynamics' of the team is much changed - and there is genuine reason to be optimistic about EFL survival - but- more can be done.
Given our dreadful league position, Gills was always going to struggle to attract 'really top' players - but,, so far, I like the recruits.
I'd like to think that, in the Summer, we'll have a massive 'clear out.'.**.I hope that improvement to our league position can entice the 2 or 3 players that should have Gills pushing for automatic promotion...I think we need address the right fullback position, along with a 'prolific' goalscorer- and sign Masterson on a permanent deal.....and probably another (younger) goalkeeper - I don't think Glenn will last much longer, and neither he or Turner 'command' their 6 yard boxes.
** I would release Green, Alexander, O'Keefe, Reeves, Lee, Ehmer, Williams, Walker...and possibly Kashket ( but maybe he might be better with the 'better' players around him... I would keep MacDonald for one more season - he has been a remarkable revelation in the last month. ...
The release of the players on my list, will (should ) enable Gills to pay for the few extras I have desired - and reduce the squad - which is top-heavy with 'deadwood.'
