Why did he need to?

He did something that is far more difficult - he won multiple honours with the same club over two decades, building at least two completely different title-winning sides, proving that you don't need to move to two-club-leagues in order to win glory.

The problem with the likes of Klopp, Pep, and The ****ish One is that they win their honours in leagues that are, effectively, two-horse races.

It would be like putting Moyes in charge of Celtic for 5 years, and then claiming that Moyes is a world class manager because he got Celtic into the CL for 5 solid years.

Do you see where I am going with this?
Good post HIAG although he built 4, arguably 5, different title winning sides.

During the 90's Fergie was working on a financial par with Liverpool (although they spent more) and he had to overcome the new moneybags Blackburn (which of course he managed to do so). It was only in the early 00's, after winning several league titles and a European Cup, that he had unprecedented financial muscle (and rightly so given he'd established United as the top club in England).

Towards the end he built two teams when other clubs (Chelsea to begin with and later City) were chucking money around like it was going out of fashion while he had to work under the Glazers.

The criticism that he never tested himself abroad is the definition of clutching at straws! And the assertion that he only won titles in two horse races is comical, head up the arse, ignorant, limited brain cells left nonsense. It wasn't a two horse race when he won his first few titles at United and it wasn't a two horse race when he won his last few titles at United. It certainly wasn't a two horse race when he was at Aberdeen!

Also he was certainly never sacked twice by the same club.
