Totally agree... start in a position and don't need to back off as you can win the ball. But Skrtel doesn't like it, he wants to drop deep and defend his 18 yard box which as we've had no proper DM in place allows players to just run at him.

Because of that and the fact he's not the best 1v1 defender I think he feels more comfortable just backing off so he can't be beaten. Occassionaly fine as allows others to come back and cover, but often it leaves big space for forwards to progress into and gives them a free shot.

Skrtel no doubt has a place in the squad and is better than Lovren/Toure/Ilori (although I'd love to see Ilori given a proper go) and he does have strengths. I've said many times as the spare man in a back 3 he's all you could ask for. Someone that will attack the ball in the air and is comfortable in coming out and covering, knows his limitations on the ball so having 2 CB's either side and a CM infront means he will always have an easy pass on as well so won't ut team under pressure with a bad pass forward.

I agree we should be looking to improve on Skrtel (amongst others) but you're making a Jimmyesque mistake as that's not (and never has been) my point. My point is that at the moment he deserves BETTER than just a place in the squad.....as there isn't anyone better IN THE SQUAD <laugh>

Yes he backs off to his 18 yard box....just as Terry backed off and backed off countless times when AVB was having his Chelsea nightmare. The reason is they start off too high and then can't cope. I'm not comparing them in terms of ability but style, they are both good old fashioned English style centre backs who play best in and around the 18 yard box. Skrtel isn't the problem (neither is Sakho really), the way Rodgers sets us up is. He can buy all the players he wants to fit this defence but I'm still not convinced it will ever make much difference unless the new coaching staff knock some sense into him. Have a decent back four with full backs who support attacks when necessary (not attack at will) and give them at least one man in midfield who offers them decent protection and eases the pressure. Had he spent his first season or two solidifying the back line he could have let the rest just get on with it.

There was an Asian guy trying to take a selfie with a massive selfie stick one of the last times I was there. He did get a shed load of abuse and got told off by the steward but he was just a typical Thomas Cook Liverpool fan with his 2 bags full of merchandise from the club shop and his new Liverpool kit and hat. He knew none of the songs, none of the traditions and just generally one of those obtuse people who sits for 90 minutes sticking a camera in people's face any time a chant gets going. People like that might add to the club's coffers but they really don't help the atmosphere because they don't sing themselves and they discourage other people around them from singing because of the constant surveillance on them.

Basically a lot of the current woes can be traced back to the club selling/giving tickets to people like Thomas Cook who sell these crazily priced packages to tourists who know nothing about the club, only what they've seen on TV.

I like the fact he got a shed load of abuse <laugh> and I know what you mean but nevertheless....many of the tourists tend to sit around the margins (I see more in the Paddock and Centenary than on the Kop) yet the atmos from the hardcore isn't what it used to be either. It got pretty electric at times the season before last but only before the game. As soon as it starts and everyone sits down it was still below the volume you'd expect considering we were chasing the title. Basically it's all the aforementioned factors rolled into one giving us the completely sterilised atmosphere we knew would happen in the end <laugh>

You lads think the club's Thomas Cook sales are the problem?

I think there's quite a bit of season ticket sales going on personally.

My view is that these guys bring revenue into the whole city and shouldn't be abused at all..... but..... they are big on etiquette over there so why there is zero advice to them on what to don don't know. Selfie sticks and crowd filming should not be allowed.

The problem is neither AVB nor Pep style defenders will win a massive amount in England (unless they adapt). Jose style on the other hand......well we all know how that ends up don't we and that's the whole point for me. Defending is a simple thing, there's nothing complicated about setting up a decent back four for English football...unless you're trying to reinvent the wheel Rodgers style.

Just for the record the Sakho vs Skrtel stats:

Key passes per game...Sakho 0.3, Skrtel 0.2 (both piss poor but then they are centre backs)

Pass complete %....Sakho 89.4, Skrtel 90.1 (nothing in it really)

Long balls...Sakho 2.8 per game, Skrtel 2 (so neither play too many)

Sakho makes more tackles (by a small margin),

Skrtel makes more interceptions (by a tiny margin),

Skrtel more blocks (by a large margin)

Skrtel more clearances (by a massive margin).

Skrtel also wins the most headers by a fair margin :) He also played 1500 more minutes this season <ok>

Add to all that the extra "giving a ****" factor and that's why I don't get the Skrtel bashing from some on here that's all

All those I have bolded show exactly why they are different. If you look at what Sakho does better compared with Skrtel and Vice Versa shows that one is a defender who drops deep and one is a player who plays on the front foot.

I think our team pushes too high and the defence don't go with them. Based on the defenders we have if we dropped Skrtel and played lets say Ilori (granted his is in experienced) with Sakho I think we would see us concede less goals. In our current crop of centre backs I think Skrtel is the odd one out. Not that he's rubbish (far from it) but he is the one least suited to how we play.

doubtful...

why? mingolet won't sweep up enough

we should push much higher against sides with one forward and especially when said forward is a target man.

picutre of the kid Allan Rodrigues de Souza training with LFc. It seems he is at least on trial with club.

You do raise a very good point MITO, that is another weakness of ours. Which tells me that either rogers doesn't know what to look for in a defender, or he doesn't have full confidence in our defenders ability to play high, or as someone else has stated he has a "they will sort it themselves attitude.
