Yes to homegrown.

But at 18 surely someone should be advising him...

i I think I could make a **** load of money being an agent and actually advising people properly. No don't go to city, play a full season at Fulham do well and we'll get you a move to mid table prem club next year. Do well there, in 2 years time can get you a big move... Oh and you'll still not be 21!

the only people these ****ers are taking notice of now days is agents lol.

but i do agree with the point you are making, its not so much a pride thing any more, its make the most money as quick as possible, football has been ruined by greedy players and owners.

Probably helps get around FFP as well as don't have to pay all money out in one go so can split it over several seasons.
Transfer fees are already wrote down on the books as paid over the length of the contract, so makes it easier to balance the books if you pay out on a big window. If you renew a player's contract who's 2 out of 4 years into a contract for another 4 years, the remaining payment due to be paid over 2 years is now spread over the next 4 years - so clubs can really fiddle FFP and expenses if they're clever with contract extensions. Most clubs do this afaik, but I'm no finance expert so can't explain any better than this!

Anyway, what's really annoying for me is seeing these great players that many of us wanted last season as promising talent in weaker leagues are only now just being noticed when their price has sky rocketed and competition is high; think Firmino and Lacazette. Either our scouts only have permission to travel within the UK and have no access to sports TV channels, or they're ****/lazy. I can't decide which makes more sense.

Thats the thing. Owners are willing to throw this silly money at young players so can you really blame them for taking it?

i guess all well and good U.S. Saying should play football first and money is 2nd... But until you're in that position, never know. Maybe these kids think they might not ever get another chance to earn that big money so 40k on 5 year contract has them set up for life really

I think some are forgetting that these players have probably been the best players by miles out of the players they've played with at school, youth and club level so probably have a really strong belief (or arrogance) in themselves to be able to nail down a position at a big club.

is that right though? As a selling club I'd want my money over the 4 years of that's what is agreed, not over 6 of they get an extension after a couple of years?

if you kept extending it every year could get to a point where never really paying it off until they retire!

Nonono, that's how it's wrote down in the books. Not how it's actually paid. It might be paid upfront (rarely is though) but to more easily meet FFP, it's wrote against the entire contract length.

Hes 18.. He shouldn't be worrying about money ffs.
Maybe but on the flip side, if that player gets a career ending injury he has missed his opportunity to support his family for life. At the end of the day you'd put your family first. The other thing to consider is that he is wanted now by a big club and he may not be next year etc. All top players need a bit of an ego and think "i'm good enough to start here" if you don't have that attitude you won't be a top player. This kid might feel he can make it there.

However I do understand the point you make.

Not sure on that. While we could use some steel in midfield, he does seem a bit of a prick and someone who'll sulk when the chips are down. Any Newkie fans got an opinion?
