so you just mean a DM in essence then

No. I just mean a disciplined midfielder.

If we have 70% of the ball this player will be stood there middle of opponents half having to make play and we don't want a side shuffler who will just pass the ball to trent to do it all.

That's no use to us.

Well its not Bellingham money, that much we do know.

Alisson
Konate vvd Robertson
Trent macallister
Szbolozlai Jones
Salah gakpo nunez

Imo that's the day 1 team as of now. (Diaz speculation leads me there)

Bajcetic and Elliott are the current cm options if thiago, fabinho and Henderson all go.

That does suggest that morton could be retained for europa and theres room to buy 1. My logic is if its one then that player needs to move between positions as these kids can't be physically relied on.

Perversely Phillips actually makes more sense than some but it's the wrong club to try to buy from.

The issue now is that once you step outside that first 11 you find a lot of kids

Kelleher
Bradley matip gomez
Bajcetic tsimikas
Elliott morton
Doak jota Diaz

Not great is ut?

A few back line changes are required on top of that midfield so I think we will be looking to just two competitions this time.

Zobo is injured

Well can i suggest you actually say what you mean instead of assigning a random number to a type of player who would normally just be called a CM .

We won the CL and PL with a side shuffler!

a DM or 6 or whatever you want to call it is completely different to other midfield roles - interceptions, tackles, positional awareness are, covering and reading the game are much more important than simply passing the ball sideways. We absolutely do need this and imo, it’s not Trent (as much as he is great on the ball).

Well this is the modern world isn't it.

people say 6 which is a short number not a position but it's better than saying a defensive midfielder as it's an insult to any decent player.

people say 8 when they really.mean someone who runs off anywhere they feel like. attacking midfielder seems to be a compliment to a player but for me it just says they can't defend.

for example Gerrard, rafa played him rw, no 10.

was he an 8 under houllier, was he a 6 under Rodgers?

who knows. he had the same instincts in every position.

what we need is a person who understands how to stay with the ball. not get ahead of it all the time ( henderson)

thaigo would be that player if he could stay it and would actually track back. he can do neither.

my view of a "no 6" in spirit and deeds is alonso. an utterly perfect player imo

alonso played for us with a tigerish Masch winning balls alongside him and then feeding him the ball in a 4-2-3-1. He was an amazing player whose intelligence countered his only weakness; lack of pace. Arguably the best midfielder in the world for a season or two at Madrid. All that said, I think he’d be exposed at the base of our midfield - most would…..I’d go for pace - a Kante type, who buzzed around the half spaces giving the opposition no time to breath….preferably taller but that’s being picky.

I think I’ll message Jurgen straight away and let him know <laugh>

but only you knew what you meant by a 6 which made the conversations a tad complicated <laugh>
Alonso fits my version of what i assumed you meant by a 6 i.e. a deep lying playmaker

that's your meaning. there's nothing wrong with your meaning.

I have a different meaning in my head which doesn't make it right or wrong. it's just mine.

I feel many classic old school midfielders who knew when to go and when not to fit the term. for me it's more someone who doesn't just go in front of the all but stays with play and is goal side or level with the ball. if that's a playmaker fair enough

Can someone help? I seem to have taken a wrong turn... I was looking for the 'transfer rumours thread' but somehow ended up in the 'reinventing football thread'

which is why i use descriptive terms not numbers in my posts .

What's funnier than Mbappe to Liverpool rumours?
Mbappe to Spurs rumours!

.Why the hell would he play for Spurs? Not for money, hes turning down $2mill a week from PSG, doubt Spurs could offer more than that. Not for cups, because well...

Our squad is absolutely paper thin.

It was last season, its even worse now. Its incomprehensible that we arnt going to make more signings.

Ali / Keller

Taa / Bradley
konate / matip
Vvd / Gomez
Robbo / Tsimikas

Thiago / Bajcetic
Szobo / Elliott
Mac / Jones

Salah / Doak
Gakpo / Jota
Diaz / Nunez

Not horrendous but does show a couple key players were missing a first/second choice. RB and that DM role. But all those 2nd choice players can at least step in at a decent level and are generally always available bar maybe Matip.

Think 2 more players is fine. Remember we’re in the Europa this year so the 2nd choice will get a lot more game time there where can rest the first team unlike in the CL so in theory means can play the first team in key prem games more often this year baring injuries.

two more would be ok.

matip is done. the fact he is still there tells us the story. any other club chasing top of table would have said sorry and bye to him a year ago.. min.

gomez can cover rb and thsts the only reason he'd be kept by anyone.

that means cb is an absolute issue for us. why? I'll bet you knoate.missed 5-10 league games through knocks.

rb is an issue yes.

midfield needs a senior body. absolutely 100% need.

forwards need to gel and deliver. they are the key for me.
