2023 is the big date for all.
salah will be heading for 32 - the current climate looks like he is well down the lists for clubs he'd want to go to.
Mane will be 32 - aging out.
firmino will be 32 - we've extracted full value here
OX will be 30 - does he merit a contract? no imo. do we risk losing 20mil. maybe.
Keita will be 28 - this is his keep or sell year.

thiago (we won't care by then)
gomez will be 27
matip will be 34

Robertson is not til 2025

Thats 22/23 and this is 21/22

The only player i would be mildly concerned with is rhys williams who i would like to get on a new contract then loan out with a view to increase his value.

Players who need to go: Phillips, origi, shaqiri. Sell this window or give more contracts which is just not on.

be Woodburn is another who is low value but will be out of contract. Time to decide on the lad. contract and sale or no?

We are reasonably well covered by the actions taken when klopp signed his extension.

the spine of the team is there Alisson konate/gomez, van dijk, trent, robertson, fabinho, henderson, jota.

we didn't bin anyone. he was offered a contract.

henderson is HG, the captain and like milner worth it for off the field activities. I would also query the length given his age but we will see. It think its just a tad long.

As mito says? Hendo is home grown so has more value to us in that aspect. He’s the captain as well. Also we don’t know what kind of wages were being demanded etc

I certainly wouldn't have wanted to give him an increased contract and if i did only a slight increase and i have backed him for years .
Gini wasn't binned he just wouldn't sign a new contract unless he got a huge increase .

We dont know if it was just length of contract or if it was length and wage but imo wijnaldum had something in front of him and refused it but has managed to get more than what vvd is now on from psg.

Sorry Jimmy but you're wrong there. I haven't read a single word from Henderson himself or his representatives about his contract situation. It's all been speculation. Unlike Wijnaldum who spoke personally about it with some specific details like wages and being unsure about the 'project ' going forward. Henderson carries himself with dignity and this was no exception.

At this point it looks to me like like we have the icing on the cake type desires and we have the klopp reality. A forward, a RB and a CM desired by some or whatever combination and klopp going on about being happy with squad while shaqiri has totally vanished into cotton wool for a move.

Perhaps Hendo's wage requirements were more in line with his perceived value to the club, perhaps it's something to do with attitude (though Gini's attitude on the pitch was exemplary), any number of things - who knows?
The thing is, nothing like this happens without a reason, so drawing conclusions armed with incomplete knowledge is rather pointless.

Binned may be the wrong word but he's on the wages at PSG partly because he was free.

I appreciate all Henderson does but I don't want him growing old in our midfield with the emphasis on pressing and tempo. Offer him a couple of years with a job as one of Klopps' assistants. A gateway to management if he wants it. He would learn off one of the best.

I don't want anyone growing old as bob paisley would say. milner has done alight as this role and if you get 10/15 games out of him of quality either leading kids in cups or in real big games then great but the ideal you you find a 24 year old guy with all the same attributes.

Wijnaldum won everything with us so you could say his ambitions here were fulfilled. No shame in him wanting to go to another top club and new country to do the same there. We were talking about Barcelona then PSG. The problem for him, as I saw it, was how to let our fans down gently. Bide his time, give his all and then move on. I would have liked him to stay but his contract situation was rumbling on for the whole of his final year with us. With hindsight, he was never going to renew.

This is possibly at the root of it all. Perhaps movement is already underway to have him brought into the management structure.
Personally I'm not a fan of retired players going straight into management of top clubs with high expectations - I'd rather they followed Gerrard's example and cut their teeth on less ambitious projects, so an assistant to Klopp could teach him a lot.

I agree. Its rather like expecting a u-18 to be a world class player instantly.

a few are but in general they just are not and surely its the same with managers. the name should not entitle you to the jump up/ There's plenty of work in academies up and down the country but it seems ego get in the way.

frank lampard is a great example. He played nice football but got really lucky with his timing and the loans that were fetchable (mount, wilson etc). In the end if cheslea didn't reach out where would he have been in year 2 at derby? sacked?

rooney went to derby, timing all wrong, no thought into the decision to go there i guess. he's taken it on now and its a complete disaster zone.

At 35 surely its then time and loads of it to take on this career from 40 odd to 60 odd. a 20 year career but take the 5 years to properly learn the trade as there's a massive difference from jogging up looking after yourself and doing someone else's session compared to organising your own etc

Gerrard is now 41. A baby in management terms, he refused an mk dons job and took his role as our u18 manager for 18months and then gambled on rangers. he got lucky tbh with backing and Celtic dropping off the level but he got to do his thing where he has a little time. in his 3rd year and should be thinking theres not much more to learn. He really needs to look at what his side did in the CL this season as that should give him a wake up call. What could he have done differently there. (not even on day but in the months before)

Lampard is now 43. 1 season at derby, 1.5 at cheslea and out of work. Not learning currently.

Its imo a lot of luck and a lot of learning.

I reckon Rooney will learn more in that **** house of a club's situation than most other roles. You always learn more from losing than winning; you either win or you learn!
